OUHK Assessment Policy
Overall Continuous Assessment Score (OCAS)
Continuous assessment is based on:
-
tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) in the form of essays or short answer questions.
Some courses may also require extended essays or projects.
-
computer-marked assignments (CMAs) consist of multiple choice questions.
For each question, you select the best answer from a number of possible
answers. Not all courses have CMAs.
-
projects/case studies in the form of essay or short answer questions.
Your course materials will indicate the number of course assignments as
well as which assignments should be completed for assessment purpose and
which are for teaching purposes only. You will also be informed of the
weighting of each assessment component (e.g., TMAs, CMAs, projects, examination).
To calculate the overall score (OCAS), the University selects the prescribed
number of your 'best' scores, including the scores for any assignments
'necessary for assessment purposes'.
Overall Examination Score (OES)
Each course has a written examination which is held at the end of the course
and normally lasts three hours. Your performance in the examination will
contribute to your Overall Examination Score (OES).
Course Score (CS)
Your Course Score (CS) will be calculated from both the OCAS and OES, which
is usually the weighted average of the two scores. However, your result
status is not automatically determined by your CS alone. When determining
your result status, the OCAS, OES and CS will all be taken into account.
Determination of Course Result Status
Your course result will be determined by your performance in both the continuous
assessment and the examination as illustrated in the chart below.

An Award Committee will be appointed for each course to determine course
results. It will decide the requirements for each course result status
by setting:
-
(a)
-
the minimum overall examination score (OES) to be attained
-
(b)
-
the minimum overall continuous assessment score (OCAS) to be attained
-
(c)
-
the minimum course score (CS) to be attained
To be awarded a particular result status, you must meet all three requirements
on OES, OCAS and CS set by the Award Committee.
