A sculpture exhibition to encourage lifelong learning

Officiating at the opening ceremony are Mrs Betty Tung (centre), wife of the HKSAR Chief Executive, (from left) Ms Ko King-sin, Prof. Ko, OUHK President Prof. Tam Sheung-wai and Ms Ko Oy-sin.

A sculpture exhibition of recent works by Prof. Norman Ko was held on campus late last year to promote the idea of lifelong learning. The University wishes to use the exhibition's theme 'flight' to tell every aspiring learner that education enables people to fly high and broaden their horizons.

Prof. Ko, 62, was Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong before his retirement. He discovered his interest in sculpture in 1979 and has since applied his professional knowledge in engineering to sculptural creation.

To encourage students to treasure their learning opportunities, Prof. Ko and his sisters, Ko Oy-sin and Ko King-sin, have donated a bronze sculpture -- measuring five-foot tall and entitled 'Spreading Wings' -- to the University for display at the campus entrance. The sculpture was dedicated to Prof. Ko's late mother, Mrs Ko Wong Sze-tung, who was born in a time when most women were deprived of education.
