Message from the President

As the President of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), I am extremely pleased to welcome you to the University.

The OUHK is one of the youngest universities in Hong Kong but I believe it is the most dynamic and innovative. It is responsive to the needs of the community and offers a variety of study modes for both post-secondary students as well as working adults. Currently, the university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research postgraduate programmes.

Our full-time, face-to-face undergraduate programmes, which first launched over ten years ago, have proved to be a great success. The OUHK has been a member of JUPAS since 2007, and to date we have over 9,000 undergraduate students, putting us in sixth place in terms of student numbers among local universities. Over the years, the University has expanded its subject offering and has developed several highly popular signature programmes. These include nursing, testing and certification, and creative arts programmes, some of which are unique in Hong Kong. With a view to providing advanced knowledge and training beyond undergraduate level, the University also offers face-to-face postgraduate programmes and research postgraduate programmes.

In addition, the OUHK offers part-time programmes, mainly through distance learning. Distance learning courses are delivered through a variety of media, both online and in print, to suit the needs of a diverse student population. The University is also dedicated to promoting mobile learning, and 2017 will see the launch of the new iBookcase app: through this tool, learning materials will be accessible via every student’s mobile device, opening up greater opportunities for flexible study.

OUHK degrees and other qualifications are equal to those of every other university established by the Hong Kong Government, are recognized both in Hong Kong and overseas for employment and higher studies purposes, and are well-respected by employers. Furthermore, many of our programmes are recognized by professional bodies.

The OUHK has multiple campuses: the main and Jockey Club campuses in Ho Man Tin, and the Kwai Hing Learning Centre. Moreover, the university is set to expand: a new Nursing and Healthcare Complex will be built in Ho Man Tin in the coming years to provide an enhanced learning space for health-related programmes as well as improved facilities for all students.

In short, the OUHK is a fully-fledged, multi-mode university and is the largest in the self-financing sector. It offers a range of programmes and modes of study that will allow you to stay competitive in the international and local marketplaces.

I wish you every success in your learning!

Professor Yuk-Shan Wong, BBS, JP
