Message from the President

Welcome to The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK)! In this website you will find a wealth of information about us - a vibrant and forward-looking university with innovative teaching and learning methodology, brand-new campus buildings and facilities, a fast-growing research profile, and a mission to meet the societal and talent needs of Hong Kong and beyond.

Students coming to the OUHK join a large, diverse and dynamic student body of around 9,400 full-time undergraduates, 1,100 postgraduates and 8,700 part-time students. Our welcoming campuses in Ho Man Tin have a full range of teaching, study and extra-curricular facilities, equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus and technology. In Fall 2020, our impressive new campus - OUHK Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare (IOH) will open its doors to train the much-needed healthcare professionals for our society, and to help build a healthier Hong Kong. The IOH also offers an ideal place conducive for learning and additional study and amenity facilities for all students to enjoy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all walks of life and OUHK is no exception. With the continued commitment and dedication of all staff and faculty, we have been providing the best learning experience possible for our students. As a leader in online education, the University transitioned seamlessly to remote teaching on our proprietary Online Learning Environment with the support of the iBookcase mobile app which places study materials at our students’ fingertips and enables them to study anytime anywhere. Within the guidelines of safety and health, we have brought back face-to-face sessions and laboratory classes in small groups whenever possible. These measures have been working effectively under the “New Normal”. Further investment in infrastructure was made and now all our classrooms are Zoom ready, which enables a hybrid mode of physical and remote teaching simultaneously as well as flexible switching between different modes of teaching to cater for different scenarios. We are capable of reacting swiftly to the changing situation and would adjust our plan continuously to support our eventual return to campus teaching.

The University responds dynamically to market trends by tailoring our professional programmes to industry needs and in turn providing our students with clear, reliable career paths. Our signature programmes include areas in high-demand such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Creative Arts, Testing and Certification, and many more. Students’ employability is always our priority. Through schemes like our Career HeadStart Programme, internship lab on campus and other career opportunities, students can gain valuable work experience and increase their marketability. Our Open InnoChallenge programme cultivates students’ creativity and entrepreneurial spirts while allowing them to learn from industry mentors.

Our growth in recent years has been accompanied by an exciting expansion in our research capabilities. We have set up seven research institutes and centres that are driving our university-wide research in special areas of strength. Our flourishing research culture is simultaneously driving our teaching quality to new heights, and achieving notable successes in terms of funding from the Research Grants Council.

I hope this brief overview has whetted your appetite to learn more. I encourage you to further explore our website to find out about our respected history, our dynamic present, and our exciting plans for the future.

Professor Yuk-Shan Wong, BBS, JP

About the OUHK

Established by the Hong Kong Government in 1989, the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) started off as a pioneer in providing higher education to all aspiring students through open and flexible learning opportunities. In 2001, the University introduced full-time face-to-face degree programmes for high school graduates just as any conventional universities in Hong Kong do. In 2007, the OUHK joined the Joint University Programmes Admission System (JUPAS) for admitting full-time face-to-face undergraduate students.

Today, the OUHK has evolved into a unique university in Hong Kong that offers two broad areas of studies. The University’s six Schools — Arts and Social Sciences, Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, Education and Languages, Nursing and Health Studies, Science and Technology and the Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE) — offer programmes that lead to Sub-degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and Doctoral degrees. The courses cover a wide variety of disciplines including arts, humanities, languages, social sciences, business administration, nursing, science and technology.

Apart from providing part-time Postgraduate programmes in distance learning mode for degree holders, the University also offers face-to-face Postgraduate programmes for a range of subjects including Chinese literature, English linguistics, translation, creative industries and cultural assets, cultural and heritage tourism, creative writing, social sciences, business administration, corporate governance, global business and marketing, accounting, risk management, wealth management, digital business, real estate, Chinese medicinal nursing, quantitative analysis, as well as global environmental management and sustainable development.

Qualifications awarded by the OUHK are on par with those offered by other government-established universities in Hong Kong and are fully recognized by the Hong Kong SAR Government, educational institutions, professional associations, accreditation bodies and employers in Hong Kong and overseas.
