Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Are the degrees awarded by The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) recognized by the Government?
  The degrees awarded by OUHK are all recognized by the HKSAR Government for the purpose of civil service appointment.
 
Q2: Is the degree awarded by OUHK recognized by other institutions for further studies?
  Our degrees are widely recognized by universities locally and internationally for the purpose of further studies.  Every year, many of our graduates have been admitted to Master’s degree programmes in the universities in Hong Kong and abroad.
   
Q3: What kind of progrmames offered by OUHK and what are their differences?
  OUHK offers ‘Programmes for direct application’ and ‘ JUPAS programmes’. 
 
  For ‘Programmes for direct application’, OUHK offers multiple entry points for applicants who meet the Year-1 entry requirements (for details, please click here) or applicants of an Associate Degree or Higher Diploma (or equivalent) for Year 2 or Year 3 entry.  Some programmes offer three types of award: Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree and Bachelor’s Degree with Honours.  Students who are admitted to the Bachelor's Degree and Bachelor's Degree with Honours programmes may choose to receive the award of Associate Degree prior to embarking on the Bachelor programmes if they have fulfilled the graduation requirements.  For choosing your entry points and exit points, please click here for details:
   
  For ‘JUPAS programmes’, majority of students are admitted through JUPAS.  However, applicants with qualification equivalent to HKDSE results are eligible to apply for admission through the direct application.  Qualifications equivalent to the HKDSE results are listed below:

  Important note: Applicants who have already applied through the 2014 JUPAS scheme are NOT eligible to apply for JUPAS programmes through direct application. However, applicants could still apply for  ‘Programme for direct application’.  For programme details, please click here:

Q4:  What are the admission entrance requirements for the full-time JUPAS programmes?
  General Entrance Requirements
 
 

1.

 

To be eligible to apply for admission to full-time Bachelor Degree programmes with Honours (Year 1 entry), a student shall have attained in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination:
   

 

  - Level 3 or above in Chinese and English;
   

 

  - Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject #
   

 

  # There is no specific elective subject requirement for programmes. 
 
 

2.

Applicants who do not possess HKDSE qualification are eligible to apply for admission if they have a qualification equivalent to HKDSE.  They should  apply directly to the University through the direct application.  For details, please refer to Q3.
 
 

Programme-Specific Entrance Requirements

  To be eligible to apply for admission to Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in General Health Care (9740) and Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in Mental Health Care  (9750), a student shall have attained in the HKDSE Examination with Level 3 or above in Chinese and English, plus Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject, where the elective subject should preferably be a science subject: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, Integrated Science or Health Management and Social Care.
   
  To be eligible to apply for admission to Bachelor of Science with Honours in Testing and Certification (9760) programme, a student shall have attained in the HKDSE Examination with Level 3 or above in Chinese and English, plus Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject, where the elective subject should preferably be a science subject: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, Integrated Science, Health Management and Social Care.
   
Q5: Are there any specific requirements for individual programmes, apart from the general admission requirements?
  Most of the programmes do not have additional requirements.  However, the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in General Health Care (9740), Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in Mental Health Care (9750) and Bachelor of Science with Honours in Testing and Certification (9760) programmes have other admission requirements.  For details, please refer to Q4.
   
Q6: Will an Applied Learning subject be considered as an elective subject in HKDSE for meeting the general admission requirements?
  For Applied Learning subjects, “Attained” or above results will be considered as satisfying the achievement level of the elective subject under the general admission requirements.
   
Q7: For applicants taking HKDSE in 2014 and beyond applying for admission through JUPAS, can IELTS/TOEFL results be used in lieu of the HKDSE English Language subject achievement?
  No, for applicants applying for the 4-year programmes via JUPAS, there will be no substitution for the four core subjects in the HKDSE, including the English Language subject.
   
Q8: Will there be faculty-based or school-based admission for the full-time degree programmes offered by OUHK?
  Admission via JUPAS are programme based, not faculty based.
   
Q9: Is interview required by the individual degree programmes?
  Not all programmes will interview applicants.  Nevertheless, some programmes will conduct admission interview to the applicants, either on a compulsory or selective basis.

Q10: The University will assess applicants with HKDSE results based on the following criteria:
  The results obtained in 5 subjects (4 core and 1 elective) will be used to calculate the admission scores of HKDSE applicants.  For applicants with more than 1 elective, the subject with the best result will be selected automatically for calculation.

Nevertheless, the University would also consider the interview performance (for selected programmes only) and the banding of applicant’s programme choice(s).

   
Q11: How to treat the applicants with multiple sittings in HKDSE exam?
  The University will only calculate the best grade attained by an applicant from the most current 2 sittings for the same subject of HKDSE examination.  There is no penalty for multiple sittings.
   
Q12: Who should NOT apply via JUPAS for admission to the 4-year curriculum.

Programmes for Direct Application

   
Q14: When should I submit the application to the University?
 

Applications will normally be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  It is advisable for applicants to submit the application as early as possible.

The application deadline* for 1st round and 2nd round will be on 31 March 2014 and 15 August 2014 respectively.

* Overseas and mainland applicants who need to apply for student visa to study in Hong Kong should submit the application on or before 30 May 2014.

   
Q15: What are the general admission requirements for direct application programmes?
  The following are the general entrance requirements for the direct application programmes:
 

-

to Year 1 (ordinary/honours degree programmes), for those who have the following qualifications: ;
  • Applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) qualifications are required to obtain Level 3 or above in Chinese and English, as well as Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject (or equivalent).

    (Honours Degree programmes with Year 1 admission via JUPAS [i.e. programmes marked with an asterisk *, see pp. 10-11 of the Full-time Face-to-Face Programmes Prospectus or click here] are open only to non-JUPAS applicants via direct application.)

     
  • Applicants with local qualifications other than HKDSE are required to:
-
complete Year 1 study of a recognized Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programme; or
-
obtain Grade E or above in AS Chinese Language & Culture1 and Use of English, and 2 AL / 1 AL plus 2 AS / 4 AS subjects in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (or equivalent)
  • Applicants with non-local qualifications are required to obtain:
-
Grade E or above in 2 AL / 1 AL plus 2 AS subjects2 in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) A-Level / International A-Level; or
-
an overall minimum score of 24 in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; or
-
other equivalent overseas qualifications (as determined by the University).
AND all applicants are required to meet the appropriate English language requirements3.
 
Explanatory Notes:
 
1.  Equivalent qualifications for AS Chinese Language & Culture are:
   
  • Grade E or above in GCE (AL/AS) / HKALE Chinese Literature / HKALE Chinese Language & Literature; or
  • Grade C or above in GCE (O-Level) / GCSE / IGCSE; or
  • Grade E or above in a language other than Chinese or English in HKCEE. In this case, applicants must have a pass in an additional AL / AS subject to substitute for AS Chinese Language & Culture.
   
2.  English Language and Chinese Language subjects shall not be counted as the subjects for meeting this requirement, except in the cases of
    the Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours (BLSEHJ1), Bachelor of Education with Honours in English Language Teaching and
     Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours (BEDELSEHJ1) programmes, for which English Language subjects will be counted.
 
   
3.  Applicants are required to fulfil the English language requirement as follows:
  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 for the paper-based test, 80 for the Internet-based test, or 213 for the computer-based test; or
  • An overall Band Score of 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Grade E or above in GCE (AL/AS); or
  • Grade C or above in GCSE / IGCSE / GCE O-Level English; or
  • Grade 4 or above in English in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; or
  • Essay score of 8 or above on the SAT Reasoning Test; or
  • Relevant equivalent qualifications as determined by the University

to Year 2#, for those who hold an Associate degree or Higher Diploma (or equivalent) in any discipline;
 

-

to Year 3#, for those who hold an Associate degree or Higher Diploma (or equivalent) in a related discipline.
   
  Entry to specific programmes may involve additional requirements.  Please refer to the specific descriptions in the 'Programme Descriptions' section of the Prospectus for Full-time programmes.

Q16: Is interview required by the individual degree programmes?
  Yes.  All programmes have interview requirement, but only the shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview.  Applicants may consider their application for 2014 admission to be unsuccessful if they do not receive any results from the University by mid-September 2014.
