OUHK 30th Anniversary "Cantonese Opera Concert on Dream of the Red Chamber" - 1 June 2019

The "Cantonese Opera Concert on Dream of the Red Chamber" is one of the signature programmes for the 30th Anniversary celebrations of The Open University of Hong Kong. Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest novels of world literature, Dream of the Red Chamber is also one of the four most reputable Chinese classical novels which have had far-reaching impact on the development of Chinese literature over many years. The novel provides a detailed and vivid record of the lives during the historical feudal society and those of the wealthy noble families in pre-modern China. Its realistic delineation of the complex relationships and alluring love stories amongst the many characters has captured the hearts of numerous readers. The depiction of the beautiful yet disheartening love story between JIA Baoyu and LIN Daiyu, also the main plot of the novel, becomes the most touching part of the story. The programme features a combination of dance performance, expert dialogue as well as excerpts of Cantonese opera. Renowned local theatre director Mr Fredric MAO Chun-fai is invited to be the Artistic Director of the programme to stage a gorgeous and fascinating production, which will enable the audience to revisit the enchanting and unforgettable love story between Baoyu and Daiyu.
