  Award: Highly Commended Award
 
 
  Details: CWFA student Wong Hoi-yin won the Highly Commended Award with his outstanding short film "Monkey Business" at the 14th Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival! Among some 100 entries by students from local and overseas institutions, Wong's work was commended by the judging panel which comprised of seasoned art and film practitioners. Directed and written by Wong and co-produced with three of his classmates, including Chan Hoi-yu, Suen Shui-hung, and Wong ka-man, "Monkey Business" depicts a series of life events of three young people following their encounter in a back alley. Through the 30-minute short film, he hopes to inspire the audience to think deeper about the concept of right and wrong, and how moral standards and ethical boundaries should be defined in this increasingly complicated contemporary world.

  Programme: Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Advertising and Media Design
 
 
  Award: The Best Team Award (Chu Ying-fai and Choi Mo-ki);
The Best Student Award (Choi Mo-ki)
 
 
  Details: Co-organized by the Hong Kong United Foundation, China Internet Development Foundation and the New Home Association, the internship programme "港澳台大學生網信企業實習計劃" was widely joined by over 200 university students this year. They participated in a 5-week summer internship programme at some of the largest IT and communications enterprises in Beijing and Shanghai, such as Tencent, Baidu and Alibaba Group. Among the participants, OU students Chu Ying-fai and Choi Mo-ki have been assigned to work at the "Shanghai Observer", an online news platform based in Shanghai. They were responsible for new media design and production, as well as other communication tasks.

Upon completion of the programme, students were required to submit a report, in the form of a short video or essay, to share their experience and knowledge gained from the internship. OUHK students Chu Ying-fai and Choi Mo-ki's team not only won the "Best Team Award", Choi Mo-ki was also awarded the "Best Student Award" with her outstanding performance and creative video presentation. Both Chu and Choi said that the programme offered them an excellent opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations, and familiarized them with the environment and culture of mainland's IT enterprises. They also found that the internship experience has enhanced their studies and provided them valuable insights to plan for their career.

  Project: "Losing Sight of a Longed Place"
 
 
  Award: Audience Choice Award
 
 
  Details: A group of three AMVE students won the "Audience Choice Award" of this year's "DigiCon6 Asia Awards – Hong Kong" with their outstanding final year project entitled "Losing Sight of a Longed Place". The annual animated / digital film contest is joined and supported by many professional and amateur producers, and the entry with the most votes from the public will be the winner of the "Audience Choice Award". Based on the true story of a young gay man Adam Wan, the award-winning animation attempted to prompt discussions on Hong Kong's LGBT movement. It also portrays the struggles of Adam fighting for LGBT rights and how he handles his complicated relationship with his father. More details: http://digicon6.hkdea.org/

  Details: The annual FYP Competition and Postgraduate Paper Contest organized by the IEEE HK Computational Intelligence Chapter is one of the most popular competitions among students of local universities and institutions. At the final held on 26 Aug 2017, OU team was crowned Champion for the first time. Full-time computing student Derek Leung Chun-wa won the championship of the Competition with his research report "Combining Effective Two-Phase Local Search with Multi-Objective Ant-Colony Optimization". The second place was also awarded to the team formed by students Calvin Tsui Yiu-chuen and Vico Lai Ka-wai. In addition to winning the FYP competition, an MPhil student Tony Tam Hiu-hin also won the second runner-up in the Graduate Student Paper Contest.

  Details: Year 4 Accounting student Alby Lam has recently received the “CPA Australia Outstanding Student Award of the Year 2016” in recognition of her excellent academic performance. Like the other 7 student awardees, Alby will be granted scholarships, internship placements at Big Four accounting firms, and other valuable networking opportunities to meet with industry leaders.

  Competition: "Challenge Cup" National Competition – Hong Kong Regional Final Hong Kong University Student Innovation and entrepreneurship Competition 2017
 
 
  Details: More than 10 students from the School of Science and Technology and Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration participated in this year's "Challenge Cup" National Competition – Hong Kong Reginal Final and won multiple awards with their outstanding projects. They competed with students from other local universities, and successfully passed through two rounds of professional judging on their innovative exhibits. This competition not only provided opportunities for academic exchange, but also allowed local young talents to showcase their creativity and innovative ideas.

  Project: Rapid Diagnosis on the Radiated Emission of Printed Circuit Boards Using Images
 
 
  Competition: "Hong Kong Electronics Project Competition 2017" organized by the Electronics Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers
 
 
  Award: Tertiary Education Category – Champion
 
 
  Details: A team of four students from the full-time Testing and Certification programme participated in this year’s Hong Kong Electronics Project Competition and won the championship in the Tertiary Education Category with their final year project. The team’s award-winning project uses analytical solution and simulation to give a quick insight of Radiated Emission based on an image of a Printed Circuit Board, offering a more cost effective and time efficient solution for preliminary Electromagnetic Compatibility testing. Their innovative idea and engaging presentation made them outshine their counterparts, including some post-graduate students, and earned them a prize of $10,000.

  Competition: The 6th Global Youth Chinese Literary Award organized by the Faculty of Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong
 
 
  Details: Organized by the Faculty of Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Global Youth Chinese Literary Award is one of the prestigious awards in literary writing which receives entries from young students from over 200 universities worldwide annually. This year, four CWFA students participated in the competition and their work received recognition from the judging panel, demonstrating a high standard of creativity and excellence in writing skills. Their outstanding work along with other award-winning pieces were showcased at “The 6th Global Youth Chinese Literary Award: Exhibition of Winners' Works” held in the Hong Kong Central Library from 8-18 April.

  Competition: "AIA Business Sustainability & Risk Management Case Analysis Competition 2017" organized by the Association of International Accountants (AIA)
 
 
  Award: First runner-up
 
 
  Details: A team of two OU full-time Business students participated in the AIA Business Sustainability & Risk Management Business Case Competition and came in second among 18 universities from Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China. Each team is required to prepare a brief report that is ready for integrating into the CSR report for a building construction company. Their outstanding report and creative conversational presentation impressed the judges, and earned them a scholarship of $15,000 as well as internship opportunities at Ascent Partners.

  Details: A team of four accounting students participated in the ACCA Business Competition. The competition offered students the opportunity to attend skills enhancement workshops and students can learn directly from the business elite with real-life cases. After rounds of competition, the OUHK team won the merit award in the final 7 teams out of the 400+ teams.

  Competition: Inter-University ALGO Trading Contest 2016/17
 
 
  Details: Thirteen renowned universities in Hong Kong and Mainland China were invited to join the Second Inter-University ALGO Trading Contest and more than 100 applications were received. Participants are required to devise their algorithmic trading strategies which mimicked real life algorithmic trading experience – from generating trading ideas to implementing trading strategies. With their innovation and creativity, “OUHK Algo Trader”, one of the OUHK teams, has been selected as finalists and won the 7th place in the Finale.

  Competition: Hong Kong X-Tech Startup Platform Undergraduate Final Year Project Supporting Scheme 2016-17
 
 
  Details: 4 OUHK teams participated in the "Hong Kong X-Tech Startup Platform Undergraduate Final Year Project (FYP) Supporting Scheme 2016-17" and have been selected by the Selection Committee as finalists with their innovative projects. There are in total 108 project proposals submitted by students from local universities, of which 50 projects have been shortlisted as finalists. Each shortlisted team has been granted $20,000 for the execution and enhancement of their research projects. Our students will compete for the "Best FYP Award" along with the other 46 teams and the result will be announced later in July 2017.

  Details: Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration graduate Cheuk Chin-Kwo was one of the top Hong Kong candidates attaining highest mark in the ACCA Professional Level examinations held in March 2016. She was presented as "Top Affiliate" by the ACCA for her hard work and outstanding result. Another graduate Lee Wang-Tat scored the highest mark for ACCA Financial Management paper and was presented as the Top Score Winner.

  Competition: The "Innovate Festival Creative Contest 2016" organized by JCDecaux Transport
 
 
  Awards: Gold Award
 
 
  Details: Contestants were required to create an innovative MTR promotion campaign incorporating the theme "Innovation•Connecting Life" for a brand they chose. Two OUHK full-time students, Hayley and Jane, developed an advertising campaign entitled "Personalize Your Music journey" for the local digital music service MOOV. The core idea is to make use of various formats of MTR advertising to attract passengers to download the tailor-made song-lists from MOOV’s website or mobile app. The judges were impressed by their innovative ideas, and they won the Gold Award with a scholarship of HK$8,000 among 60 plus entries.

  Competition: The "Help You to Start Your Business" Competition organized by the Chamber of Hong Kong Computer Industry
 
 
  Awards: Champion and First runner-up
 
 
  Details: Seven students from the OUHK Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration and School of Science and Technology joined this year’s “Help You to Start Your Business” Competition and managed to obtain excellent results. They formed two teams with students from other local institutions, and set up exhibition booths at the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival with a mission to achieve maximum revenue. Contestants were required to write a comprehensive business proposal and undergo online promotion campaigns to advertise their booths and products so as to accumulate invaluable experience of how to start and run a business. The champion team (「奇」艦店) won the “Best Online Promotion” award and “Best Booth Design” award, while the first runner-up team (E.T.) captured the “Best Presentation” award.

  Details: The Basketball Team was invited to play in this year's HSMC Sports Invitation Game to compete with teams from other local tertiary institutions. All the players exerted themselves fully and the Men's Team won the first runner up while the Women's Team came fourth after rounds of intense competitions.

  Details: The OU Badminton Team was invited to play in this year's HSMC Sports Invitation Game, where they competed with representatives from 11 other local tertiary institutions. After rounds of fierce competitions, the OU team proudly captured a total of four prizes.

  Competition: The Collegiate Competition on Educational Technology co-oganized by the OUHK and the International Hybrid Learning Society
 
 
  Award: Winner in Educational Technology Projects
 
 
  Details: Two OUHK teams won the "Winners in Educational Technology Projects" competition and each team was awarded HK$10,000 for their outstanding performances. The project created by Chan Chun-kit and his teammates is an android mobile app designed to help users to prepare for their driving tests. Features of the app include written test materials and examination route videos and more. On the other hand, the project by So Long-hei and his teammates is a virtual reality (VR) programme aiming to improve the well-being of elders. Users are able to go on virtual tours to relax or play memory games to combat dementia.

  Programme: Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art
 
 
  Competition: National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest 2016
 
 
  Award: Second Place Winner, Cities
 
 
  Details: The National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year Contest is one of the largest international photography competitions, which attracts thousands of incredible entries every year. Entries were submitted across the three categories of “Nature”, “Cities” and “People”. OUHK student Jimmi Ho Wing-ka scooped the second place prize with his image “Silenced” under the category of “Cities”. According to Ho, “Silenced” was taken during his last trip to Guangzhou, and the building he shot was a dormitory of The South China Normal University. Ho also said that receiving the award is a great encouragement and has motivated him to take more good pictures.

  Competition: Youth Engineers Programme 2015/2016 Team Presentation Competition organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE)
 
 
  Award: Champion
 
 
  Details: Three OUHK Testing & Certification students joined the “Youth Engineers Programme” Team Presentation Competition organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and won the championship among 12 teams of university students! They chose to study on a soft drinks manufacturing company and made recommendation on improving their productivity through the concept of “Smart Engineering”. All the three OUHK students found the competition very rewarding as it encouraged them to be innovative and provided them the opportunity to apply their knowledge into real practice.

  Competition: The Presentation Competition organized by the Young Mentoring Program, Institution of Engineering and Technology (HK)
 
 
  Award: Silver Award
 
 
  Details: Two OUHK Testing & Certification students joined the Young Mentoring Programme organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong (IETHK) earlier this year, and won a silver award at the Programme’s Presentation Competition with their insightful findings and excellent presentation skills. The competition required participants to join two technical visits to RTHK and a Shell oil depot in Tsing Yi, followed by a report on their findings and recommendations for improvement about the facilities and infrastructure. In addition to organizing the said presentation competition, the IETHK Young Mentoring Programme also included a series of events such as presentation skills workshop, career sharing sessions, networking events, and case competitions to help students prepare for their future professions.

  Programme: Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art
 
 
  Competition: 2016 Sony World Photography Awards
 
 
  Award: National Award Winner (Hong Kong)
 
 
  Details: The Sony World Photography Awards is one of the largest worldwide photography competitions which attracts thousands of entries every year. Among the 10 shortlisted entries from Hong Kong, OUHK student Jimmi HO Wing-ka was the winner of this year's National Award (Hong Kong) with his image "Childhood". Jimmi's photo captures the interesting rainbow colour design and playground of Choi Hung Estate, communicating the pure joy of childhood. His award-winning image was showcased at this year's Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition held in London and published in the annual Sony World Photography Awards book.

  Competition: KKday business case competition (KKday 大專實戰世界任我行 2016)
 
 
  Award: Champion
 
 
  Details: OUHK student Lee Tsz-ching (right) teamed up with two students from other local institutions to participate in a business case competition organized by a Taiwan travel e-commerce platform KKday. The competition requires its contestants to complete a series of tasks including market research, planning promotion campaigns and producing a video to demonstrate their creativity and business knowledge. Lee's team won the champion among the 20 shortlisted teams and was awarded a prize of HK$30,000 to travel in Europe.   Competition: "The Outstanding Prospective Teacher Award 2016" organized by the Hong Kong Prospective Teachers Association
 
 
  Award: Gold Award
 
 
  Details: With his well-prepared teaching materials and excellent teaching skills, CHENG Shing successfully went through two rounds of selection, and won the Gold Award in this year's Outstanding Prospective Teacher Award. Like the other six Gold Award recipients, Cheng has great enthusiasm for teaching. He wishes to become an English teacher and a role model for the younger generation.

  Details: This year's Joint University Karatedo Tournament was held at the Multi-purpose Hall, OUHK Jockey Club Campus on 17 April. The competition was widely joined by more than 200 participants from nine local tertiary institutions. The OUHK Karate Society, holding a strong home ground advantage, successfully captured four medals in individual games and came third for the Team Kumite.

  Competition: "Best Innovation Awards 2016" organized by the PolyU SPEED
 
 
  Award: The Champion
 
 
  Details: Four students from the LiPACE programme "Higher Diploma in Airline and Tourism Studies" won the champion in the "Best Innovation Awards 2016"! Though it is the first time for the four students to join the competition, they managed to defeat 60 teams from other local institutions with their highly creative proposal and outstanding performance in the presentation. The "Best Innovation Awards" targets Associate Degree and Higher Diploma (HD) students in Hong Kong and for this year, all participating teams were required to write a business plan for partner organization Ngong Ping 360. It is expected that the competition would not only demonstrate the participants' exquisite knowledge and creativity, but also to enhance their writing and presentation skills.

  Details: The main objectives of the completion are to promote innovative technologies and creativity, as well as the importance of intellectual property rights among the younger generations. Participants are required to design and print their own 3D cartoon characters with 3D printing technologies based on one of the two given themes – "Online Protection of Intellectual Property Rights" and "Nurture/Support Creativity". Four OUHK students won awards among 40 submissions. The awardees said joining the competition enabled them to gain valuable insights on the latest design software and 3D printing technologies, and have deepened their understanding about the importance of upholding intellectual property rights.

  Details: Among all the submissions made by young film-makers coming from China, Hong Kong and Macau, the OUHK team's microfilm "愛‧無礙《相信》" ("Love‧No Barrier: Believe") won the "Most Touching Film" award. The winning team has invited a visually impaired person to be the leading actor, encouraging viewers to care more about the needs of the disabled. It is also the wish of the team that the film can help break down the barriers between the able-bodied and the disabled, fostering social integration in Hong Kong.   Details: A number of local tertiary institutions participated in the "全城‧傳誠" Microfilm Online Fest" organized by the ICAC. Participants were required to produce a microfilm with the theme "integrity". Among all the 12 submissions, the OUHK team's microfilm "誠實餐廳" ("An Honest Restaurant") won the "Most Viewed Integrity Microfilm" award and "Practitioners Choice" award. The winning team wished to encourage viewers to reflect on the importance of honesty and integrity through a business startup story of three good friends.   Details: 10 full-time students won the second runners up in the open team at the annual Diamond Sedan Competition organized by the Diamond Cab on 29 Nov 2015. Team members have to carry the Diamond Sedan to create an extraordinary sports experience for their young, disabled sedan passengers, so that they can enjoy the excitement and forget about the restrictions from wheelchairs during the fun race.

  Competition: The 14th Challenge Cup AVIC National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest
 
 
  Details: 21 students from the School of Science and Technology participated in the "Challenge Cup Hong Kong University Students Extra-curriculum Technology Contest" earlier in May 2015 and won some Merit Prizes with their outstanding projects. They entered the 14th Challenge Cup AVIC National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest in Guangzhou with their award-winning projects and competed with other students coming from more than 500 universities in Hong Kong and China in November. To facilitate academic exchange, students have to demonstrate their projects at an exhibition fair held by the organizer during the final round. Three Second Class Awards and three Third Class Awards were won by OUHK students eventually.

  Details: Each of the teams / participants were required to submit a 5000-word paper on the theme "Risk Management and Corporate Governance" and the six finalist teams will be invited to present their papers and compete for the "Best Presentation Award". This year, there were 39 teams from the local universities and other academic institutions joining the competition and the OUHK team is proud to become the Champion. The Champion paper will be published in the Institute's Journal CSj in December 2015. The competition provided a great opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge about business ethics and governance principles which are important virtues for them to become successful and all-rounded business elites.

  Details: Eleven full-time students divided into two teams to compete in the "Help You to Start Your Business" Competition organized by the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2015. Each of the teams was required to set up an exhibition booth at the Festival and to achieve maximum revenue. In addition to enhancing students’ knowledge about formulating marketing strategies and the local digital industry, the competition also helped them to accumulate invaluable experience in how to start and run a business. The two teams won the first runner-up and second runner-up among all the ten teams of the competition.

A team of Full-time Interior Design students from LiPACE participated in the competition with more than 50 teams from various tertiary institutions to design an apartment for an elderly suffering from Dementia. Despite keen competition, the team formed by Year 2 LiPACE students won the Championship with the prize to go to Cambridge University in July for a Study Tour. The rest of the four LiPACE entries also won merit titles.

Disadvantaged people are hired through NGOs and they are encouraged to take part in the manufacturing process, so as to promote harmony in the community and increase the self-confidence of the minorities. Two year 3 accounting students were selected to join the visit to Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. The visit was led by the HRSAR Government during 4 -7 May 2015. The delegation comprised of government officials, industry leaders from the innovation and technology sector and about 20 university students. They visited Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, and attended a luncheon in honour of Chief Executive C Y Leung.

Full-time Computing Engineering Year 4 student Hugo Leung Wai-yin won the Best Paper Award with his design of a 'Low-cost Intelligent Pillbox' at the IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015. The intelligent pillbox is a portable device for reminding the elderly and patients with chronic disease to take the right dose of medicine on time. It can be connected via SMS, and remotely controlled by the mobile phone of doctors and patients' family.

Year 4 student Wong Hin-lik from the Creative Writing and Film Arts programme received a Special Mention in the Fresh Wave Short Film Festival 2014 with his entry The Glass City. Hin-lik was both the director and the scriptwriter of the film. Since its inception in 2005, Fresh Wave has become one of the events of the year among local young filmmakers.

Details:

51 LiPACE Students formed 14 teams to join the competition. Among them, 4 teams were selected as "Outstanding Performance Team" and "Proficiency Team" respectively. One of them won the championship. Participants of the competition were required to conduct a study on Luk Fook International Limited as the business strategy advisor, developing a strategic plan to improve its business performance for the coming 3 years. The winning students reflected that they have learnt a lot in job division, team spirit and the application of accounting knowledge.

Details:

The existing fall detectors for elderly available in the market claim to be effective in detecting fall so as to reduce the risks of delay in assistance. But some of the devices in fact are costly, inaccurate and often cause false alarms. Suen Po Kwong successfully developed a reasonably accurate algorithm which can be implemented in low cost wrist-worn fall detectors. Suen is hoping to cooperate with a local healthcare device company to bring the new product to market.

Details:

High Visibility Clothing (HVC) is one of personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers. It can help protect workers by drawing attention of vehicle drivers or machine operators. This project aims to study and analyze the applications of the HVC at the working environment. Percy found that reflective vest or uniform provided by most organizations could not suit the needs of the workplace, so that the protective effect may be inadequate. He therefore suggested the related government departments consider establishing guidance to enhance the workplace safety according to international standards.
