A Psychology degree with Honours is the first essential step for articulation to future membership and training in professional Psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. Because of its wide applicability on many aspects of human's lives, the study of psychology is a good preparation for further studies and many professions (e.g. management and marketing, design, health care). The programme aims to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge in different disciplines of psychology for employment and further studies.
Aims
Bachelor of Science with Honours in Psychology aims to give students a thorough grounding in the theory and application of psychology (according to British Psychological Society’s professional standards for undergraduate degrees), and to help them develop interest in key specialized subject areas. This will ensure that students are equipped with the essential knowledge(e.g. experimental work), to position them advantageously for further study, research work and/or a career in the psychological profession.

Objectives
Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to demonstrate:

A sound knowledge and understanding of concepts and theories in the area of social, developmental, neurophysiological, personality and intelligence and cognitive psychology;

Professional Recognition

Further Studies / Progression Pathway
The programme has strong research focus and graduates are keen on pursuing Psychology-related higher
research postgraduate programmes. They may also apply to various human services related taught postgraduate
programmes in local or international universities. Previous graduates have been successfully admitted to a number
of local and international Master’s programmes including Neuropsychology, Counselling Psychology and Child
Developmental Disorders.
Career Prospect
The systematic study of human mind and behaviours allows graduates to be well equipped with broad-based
skills to work in a number of people-oriented industries including education, health care, social care or business
in both private and public sectors. However, the job natures of some work usually require graduates to undergo
professional post-graduate conversion degree programme for related professional training for these frontline
practices. Previous graduates have been employed as research assistant, teaching assistant or part-time teacher.
Some others continue to pursue Master’s degree programmes of Psychology.
1. What is the final award of the Hong Kong degree progrmme?
The BSc in Psychology degree is awarded by the University of Salford (UK).
2. What are the admission requirements for the Year Two entry?
To be eligible for Year 2 entry, applicants should be graduates of recognized Associate Degrees, Advanced/Higher/Professional Diplomas in Psychology (QF Level 4) in recognized tertiary education institutions. Successful entry of the application would be depended on the depth and relevance of the prior learning, overall academic results, fulfillment of English language requirement and performance at the admission interview.
3. Is there any course exemption being considered in the entry to the programme?
Applicants who have previous studies that is relevant to your current academic programme may request to receive course exemption based on the prior learning. Request for credit exemption must be made at the initial application. Applicants are required to provide full academic record including programme information, course syllabus and academic transcript for consideration.
4. Are the graduates of the Hong Kong programme being recognized by any professional bodies?
Graduates of the programme with good Honours degree may apply to graduate memberships of local professional bodies such as the Hong Kong Psychological Society, Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association and may also apply to membership of the British Psychological Society by individual accreditation. This provides a first step to careers in Psychology or Counselling with additional postgraduate professional training. There are successful cases of graduates in acquiring graduate memberships of these professional bodies and admitted to postgraduate and professional training of Psychology and Counselling.
5. What are the special features of the programme?
The BSc in Psychology programme provides a systematic training of core areas of Psychology, combining critical appraisal of theoretical evidence, research experimentation, practical applications and contemporary transferable skills as be required by employers or for further studies. In a progressive manner, students will acquire the scientific basis of Psychology and be able to design and conduct an independent research in their final year. This provides essential employable competencies for a number of people-oriented careers or research-based postgraduate trainings.

7. What are the benefits of studying a locally accredited overseas degree programme?
The BSc in Psychology programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) as locally accredited degree programme to reach the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework Level 5, which is equivalent to the standing of Bachelor’s degree offered by local government-funded Universities in Hong Kong. The BSc in Psychology programme is also listed in the Information Portal for Accredited Post-secondary Programmes (iPass), which the list of locally-accredited self-financing programmes are recognized by the Government.
Full-time students studying locally-accredited self-financing post-secondary progammes are eligible for grant and loans under the Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students (FASP).
