    Programme aims

    This programme aims to develop a high level of English proficiency and in-depth knowledge and understanding of a wide range of aspects of the English language.

    Programme coverage

    The programme includes courses in English proficiency and English language studies. Students are also allowed to take 25 free-choice credits from other disciplines to broaden their perspectives.

    • The English Language: Past, Present and Future
    • The Art of English
    • The Structure of Modern English
    • Introduction to Semantics and Pragmatics
    • Language and Society in Hong Kong
    • Discourse Analysis
    • Stylistics
    • Effective Use of English
    • English for Effective Communication II: Reading and Writing
    • English for Effective Communication II: Listening and Speaking
    • Preparing for IELTS
    • Drama as a Communicative Art

    Career prospects

    Graduates will be eligible to take up positions in the civil service, non-government organizations, the media and publishing and business or industry sectors. Upon completion of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (majoring in English), they will also become fully qualified English language teachers.

    Professional recognition

    The degree is recognized by the Education and Manpower Bureau as an English language major degree.
