    Programme aims

    This double-degree programme aims to develop a good understanding of the structure, use and learning of the English language, and of the professional knowledge and skills required of an English language teacher.

    Programme coverage

    The programme includes courses on English proficiency and English language studies. It also covers courses in education, and teaching and learning. There will be a school attachment, teaching practice and an overseas immersion programme.

    Programme structure

    The programme includes courses in two main disciplines:

    • English for Effective Communication II: Reading and Writing
    • English for Effective Communication II: Listening and Speaking
    • Preparing for IELTS
    • The Structure of Modern English
    • Introduction to Semantics and Pragmatics
    • Language and Society in Hong Kong
    • Discourse Analysis
    • English Grammar in Context
    • The English Language: Past, Present and Future
    • The Art of English
    • Drama as a Communicative Art

    Career prospects

    Graduates will be fully qualified English language teachers. They will also be eligible to take up positions in the civil service, non-government organizations, the media and publishing, and business or industry sectors.

    Professional recognition

    Graduates will be recognized by the Education and Manpower Bureau as having a language (English) major degree and a teacher qualification specializing in English language, and will be exempted from the English Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers.
