This course introduces students to American film art and culture through the study of great films. Through the course, students gain knowledge regarding the basic elements in Film Art and the relationship between film and culture.

2)   ENGL A103F British and American Short Stories 英美短篇小說

Students will study British and American short stories by great masters such as Ernest Hemingway, D.H. Lawrence and Amy Tan. Film adaptations from selected stories will be viewed in class, followed by discussions on topics related to the story, its themes and socio-cultural background.

3)   ENGL A108F English and Popular Song Lyrics 英語流行歌歌詞

This course aims to introduce students to the development of English-language popular music. The influence of popular music on formation and expression of identity and pop music as a form of social commentary will be explored. Some of the featuring topics include the rise of rock and roll, women in popular music, hip hop and minority cultures in pop music.

This course aims to introduce methods of reading, understanding and appreciating literary works from the genre of fiction. Students will study various forms of fiction by great masters such as Henry James, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf and Doris Lessing.

This course aims to introduce methods of reading, understanding and appreciating literary works from the genres of drama and poetry. Students will study drama and poetry by great masters such as William Shakespeare, Bernard Shaw, T.S. Eliot and Derek Walcott. Texts will be studied with the help of audio-visual materials.

6)  ENGL A203F Hitchcock Films 希治閣電影

This course introduces students to the works of Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense and psychoanalysis in film. Students will learn English and culture while they study films. Through this course, students improve their knowledge related to film art, history, society, culture and language use.

This course introduces students to major works of British and American drama from the late 19th century to the 20th century. Students will study plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Pygmalion, A Streetcar Named Desire and Death of a Salesman.

The course aims to introduce masterpieces in folktales and children’s literature. Besides exploring the history and development of folktales and children’s literature, the relationship between these two literary genres will also be investigated.

This course introduces the major concepts in modern literature through the study of fictions and plays. These works will be analyzed in five main aspects: Identity and the Crisis of Civilization; Multiculturalism; The Uncanny and the Absurd; Gender and Literature; and Modern Values. Its teaching materials include literary texts, film adaptations and online videos.
 
11)  ENGL A232F Socio-cultural Issues in English Literature I 英語文學的社會文化 ()

This course will study examples of pre-contemporary English literature, from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, which addresses social and cultural issues within a widely defined British culture. Genres of texts include the novel, the short story and poetry. In each genre, the texts have been chosen in order to show two broadly different styles of realism and modernism.

The course aims to introduce students to a variety of New Englishes as well as the theories and concepts of World Englishes. Students will look at varieties of English across the globe while examining the processes of hybridity and change in the development of New Englishes.

This course guides students to study and analyze different types of media and pop culture in English. Students will learn and think about different roles and functions of English language in the media and popular culture from critical and cultural perspectives. Texts and media representations from different cultural materials that shape pop culture such as advertisements, movies, television programmes, novels, comics, popular music, and new media will be employed to illustrate cultural globalization, as well as glocalization, through English-language cultural production and consumption.

This course introduces students to Shakespeare's canon and his world, exploring the variety of literary modes and styles in which he experimented. It looks into the significant historical, political, religious and aesthetic contexts in which Shakespeare wrote at different stages of his career.

This course provides students with an introduction to different literary theories and poetics in Chinese-Western cultural contexts. Different forms of texts from poetry, prose, novel to film will be studied to illuminate the impact of Western theories on and the development of modern Chinese literature and poetics. Chineseness and cultural identity will be discussed on the basis of structuralism, post-structuralism and postmodernism.

This course aims to examine methods of reading, understanding and appreciating masterpieces in Children’s Literature through the perspectives of children and intellectuals.
