Due to the pandemic, clinical placements for nursing students in Hong Kong were completely suspended from late January in 2020, which drew public concern about their professional training. Professor Lee Yin King, Linda, Acting Dean of our School, was interviewed by “A Closer Look”, a television programme on topical tissues. Professor Lee said that she was confident that the fresh graduates were competent in clinical work, as they had already completed most of the placement hours before the COVID-19 outbreak. During the suspension of the placements, our School adopted a number of teaching modes, including making use of computer-simulated training, to train and enhance our students’ knowledge and skills in nursing. The computer programme for the simulated patients was entirely written by experienced teachers. The simulations were highly life-like. These simulated patients can simulate many kinds of common and rare health conditions so as to enable students to receive practical training safely in the simulated wards of our University. Our teachers also gave students prebriefing before the simulation training and had discussions with them after the simulation training to consolidate the learning outcomes. |
