The programme aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of child development from conception through adolescence with emphasis on physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth. The programme examines the principles of typical and atypical child psychology based on contemporary theories and research findings, enabling students to integrate the application of knowledge into their teaching and / or parenting practices.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:

Explain theories in developmental psychology;

Evaluate the appropriateness of theories of developmental psychology in explaining development in different life stages from infancy to adolescence;

Suggest ways of fostering healthy emotional, intellectual and academic development of children and adolescents;

Explain the characteristics of children and adolescents with psychological disorders and special needs, and formulate appropriate educational strategies for them;

Design appropriate teaching methods in music and arts in order to foster children’s development; and
-
Apply counselling theories and techniques in helping children and adolescents in educational settings.

Articulation Pathways
Graduates are eligible to apply for the “BSc in Psychology” offered by Upper Iowa University in Hong Kong^, with a credit exemption of 14 credits (4 modules). In addition, graduates with a recognized bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification (with a credit average) may apply for block credit exemption of up to 90 credits.

Professional Recognition
CNE : Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates are eligible to obtain the respective CNE points under the Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) system of the Hong Kong Nursing Council.

Admission Qualifications
Applicants are normally required to meet either one of the following requirements:

Level 2 in 5 HKDSE subjects (including English and Chinese); or

Diploma Yi Jin , or
-
Satisfactory completion of a QF Level 3 Diploma or an equivalent programme; or
-
Mature applicants aged 21 or above may also be considered.
*Note: Applicants possessing "Attained/Attained with Distinction" results in an Applied Learning (ApL) subjectare deemed to have attained "Level 2/Level 3" respectively in one HKDSE subject, with a maximum of 2 ApL subjects that can be counted for admission purpose.
Assessment
Students are required to have an overall pass in the assessment of the programme. The passing mark is 50%.
Exemption Policy
Students or graduates of “CH024 兒童心理學證書(中文)” cannot be exempted from any course of “Diploma in Child Psychology”.
