The programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the cultural, historical, industrial and aesthetical aspects of popular music, and to equip them with the essential creative and technical skills to compose, perform, and produce popular music for the entertainment industry. It is designed to cover the core aspects that prepare graduates to pursue careers like singer-songwriters, recording studio technicians or related roles in the music industry.

Objectives

Upon completion of the programme, participants should be able to :

  • Apply appropriate creativity skills and production techniques in composing, performing and presenting popular music and sonic artworks;
  • Analyze the cultural, social, economic, historical and technological factors affecting the development of popular music and the related genres;
  • Evaluate popular music and market situation of present day in Hong Kong, greater China, South-East Asian, and other regions;
  • Demonstrate originality in music outputs with a strong market sense and marketing strategy;
  • Construct a portfolio of original music composition or music performance and present it in a professional manner;
  • Apply a range of generic skills, including language, interpersonal communication, information technology and analytical skills; and
  • Develop a strong sense of social responsibility and civic values, a passion in pursuing creativity and innovativeness, and a spirit of lifelong learning.

Entry Requirement

Applicants are normally required to have either one of the following qualifications:  

  • Level 2 in 5 HKDSE subjects (including English and Chinese); or

  • Grade E in 1 HKALE A-Level (or an equivalent number of AS) subject(s); and
    (i) 5 passes in HKCEE including English and Chinese; or
    (ii) 3 passes in HKCEE plus level 2 or above in English and Chinese; or

  • Satisfactory completion of a Pre-Associate Degree or an equivalent programme (at QF level 3); or

  • Satisfactory completion of Yi Jin Diploma; or

  • Other acceptable equivalent qualifications (including non-local qualifications obtained in or outside HK, or other qualifications / experience deemed to be equivalent); or

  • Mature applicants who are 21 years of age or above with a minimum of 3 years' working experience will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants are normally required to possess both of the following music qualifications:

  • ABRSM Grade 5 of any instrument (or equivalent); and

  • ABRSM Grade 5 in music theory (or equivalent).
