Mr Wong Shun-lai, one of the recipients of the Talent Development Scholarship, has won numerous awards in international swimming competitions and life-saving contests.
805 students from The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) were awarded with scholarships from the Government's Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme (SPSS) this year, which amounted to over HK$13 million in total (see Table 1). Both the number of awardees and the amount of scholarships set a record high for the University, demonstrating the excellence and distinctive achievement of OUHK students in academics, extra-curricular activities and personal development.

43 student representatives attended today's Presentation Ceremony and received the award certificates from Secretary for Education Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung. Each awardee will be granted a scholarship with a value between $10,000 and $80,000, depending on the type of scholarship.

This year, a total of 180 OUHK students were awarded the Talent Development Scholarship (TDS). The number of awardees is much higher than last year, reflecting the variety of talents and potentials of OUHK students. One of them is Mr Wong Shun-lai, a year three student in the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in Mental Health programme. Shun-lai has won a number of awards in international swimming competitions and life-saving contests. Being a student-athlete, Shun-lai has to strike a balance between his studies and sports training. He said, "It's not easy but I learnt to prioritize tasks and manage my time. However, I was surprised that the nursing knowledge and skills I gained from the programme, such as human anatomy and physiology, are also very useful for enhancing my performance in sports training and recovery."

On the other hand, 386 OUHK students received the Reaching Out Awards. Each student will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship to participate in various overseas academic and service programmes, including a study tour to South Korea, a business learning programme in Australia, and an experiential course in the Netherlands. The exchange journeys will allow students to gain valuable learning and cultural experiences and widen their horizon.

SPSS was set up in 2011 by the Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund of the Hong Kong Government to promote quality and sustainable development of the self-financing post-secondary education sector.
