The Jubilee College at the Jockey Club Campus of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) was accredited with the BEAM Plus Platinum Project award by the Hong Kong Green Building Council for its green campus design. Officially opened in February last year, the Jubilee College is one of the few tertiary institutions to receive this rating. A roving exhibition is now being held at Jubilee College until 27 April, featuring more than 30 prestigious awardees of the BEAM Plus Platinum Projects in Hong Kong. Members of the public are welcome to visit these green construction projects.

The 12-storey Jubilee College on Chung Hau Street, Ho Man Tin, incorporates many energy-saving and environmentally friendly facilities. Some of the examples are the green wall facing Princess Margaret Road and the 10-storey solar glass curtain-wall on one side of the building, which are both currently the tallest in Hong Kong. Double-glass curtain-walls are installed on the other three sides, helping to improve air quality and reduce heat and noise. In addition to this, the ‘U-shaped’ design and the additional opening at the lower three levels of the building can facilitate air movement and visual permeability at the street level. A row of small windmills has also been installed on the second floor of the building which can generate electricity for the building.

Inside, the air-conditioning system reduces electricity consumption and carbon emission by 20%, while the sensor system for lighting control also achieves energy savings. To create a green environment, there are a number of gardens in the new College and extensive planting has been carried out in the campus plaza, as well as on the rooftop. The University has preserved ‘Flame of the forest’ at the site and added special lighting to ensure its healthy growth.

The inspiration for the architectural design concept of the Jubilee College came from Tetris, a tile-matching puzzle video game in the 80’s and 90’s. The building design is based on the variety of polyominoes in Tetris, while the colour scheme of white, light and dark grey is a perfect foil for the University’s logo colour of green and blue. Playing the game requires an agile mind and fast reaction, which symbolizes well the innovation and flexibility of the education offered by the OUHK.

BEAM Plus is a comprehensive environmental assessment scheme for buildings recognized by the Hong Kong Green Building Council. It is adopted widespread to demonstrate the effective use of energy and resources for environmental protection. BEAM Plus is available for New Buildings and Existing Buildings. New Buildings projects have to undergo Provisional Assessment and Final Assessment. The Jubilee College at the OUHK received provisional Platinum rating in September 2013 and the rating has been confirmed after all environmental commitments were achieved.

The University is thankful to the OUHK Council and the Chung Hau Street Campus Steering Committee who have given their unfailing support to the University’s effort in environmental protection and energy conservation.
