    ENVR S237 is a compulsory middle-level course for the BSc and BSc (Hons) in Environmental Studies. It is complementary to many areas of study in science and technology, such as engineering, environmental and urban management, resource planning, natural resources and environmental health.

    Advisory prerequisite(s)
    You are advised to have already studied SCI S111 / SCI S121 or SCI S124 and SCI S112 / SCI S122.

    Aims
    This course aims to:

    • Give you a basic understanding of our natural resources (land, air and water) and of related environmental problems.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • An introduction to the environment

    • Epidemiology and public health

    • An introduction to environmental chemistry

    • Air pollution

    • Water supply and demand

    • Water quality

    • Water distribution and effluent treatment

    • Noise concepts and terminology

    • Fundamentals of noise control

    • Municipal waste management

    • Hazardous waste management

    Learning support
    There will be regular tutorials and surgeries with your tutors throughout the course. There will also be a number of practical sessions, two of which are compulsory.

    Assessment
    There are four assignments and a final examination. Some assignments are linked to laboratory work/projects. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
