    This course is suitable for students intending to pursue a degree in Social Sciences or in International Studies.

    Advisory prerequisite(s)
    No prerequisite is required for entry, although you are advised to have already studied SOSC A101 or POLS A201.

    Aims
    This course aims to increase the knowledge of students with a general interest in world affairs and a specific interest in how international organizations work in the contemporary world. For those who have little prior knowledge of international relations, this course can serve as a starting point leading to the wider field of international studies. For those who have had some exposure to the study of international relations, this course can serve as an advanced course, concentrating on the workings of international organizations.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Theoretical study of international organizations
      • Definitions and history
      • Classification of international organizations
      • Approaches to the study of international organizations
      • Roles and functions of international organizations
    • Key international organizations
      • Global organizations: United Nations, World Bank, IMF and WTO
      • Regional organizations: European Union, NATO, ASEAN, APEC
    • Policy issues and the future of international organizations
      • The impact of the rise of international organizations on inter-state relationships
      • China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and international organizations
      • Current research on international organizations

    Learning support
    There will be 12 two-hour tutorials and two-hour supplementary lectures.

    Assessment
    There will be five assignments and a final examination.
