    COMP S888 is one of the courses for the Master of Science in Information Technology with Internet Applications and Master of Electronic Commerce programmes. The course will expose students to both the theories and practice in developing multimedia systems.

    The course contains practical activities and illustrative programs in the Java language to illustrate important concepts such as compression and coding, audio and image processing, and digital entertainment, all of which play a central role in multimedia system development and analysis. Since the field of multimedia is rapidly changing, students will also be directed to read related articles and resources available on the Internet to keep up with the latest developments.

    There are no formal prerequisites for studying COMP S888, but students should have background knowledge in mathematics, and some programming experience in Java.

    Aims
    This course aims to:

    • Provide students with knowledge of current multimedia technologies so as to design and develop multimedia systems and applications;

    • Explain the underlying principles of the transmission of multimedia information;

    • Describe the different compression and streaming technologies used in video and audio;

    • Explain storage and retrieval requirements of multimedia systems;

    • Develop computer games as multimedia applications.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Fundamentals of multimedia

    • Digital audio and video

    • Digital processing of audio and video data

    • Data compression and coding

    • Compression of audio, image and video data

    • Multimedia communications

    • Multimedia information retrieval

    • Developing a multimedia application

    • Cryptography and watermarking

    Learning support
    There will be about 10 two-hour tutorials and 16 two-hour surgeries throughout the course.

    Assessment
    There are four assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

    Online requirement
    This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and Course Coordinator, as well as other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.

    Equipment
    Students will need access to a computer suitable for connecting to the Internet.

    Software
    Students should have access to a computer with Java JDK and a Web browser.
