    Environmental Engineering and Design

    Important notes
    This course will be taught through a part-time face-to-face mode. The course will be presented in English. However, learning materials and references related to relevant technological developments in China might be in written Chinese. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays or Sundays.

    This course covers various techniques for dealing with different types of pollution, waste minimization and least-cost treatment.

    The course aims to:

    • Review technological measures of emission reduction of the waters, atmosphere and soil;

    • Instruct students to evaluate systems of waste collection, disposal and utilization;

    • Discuss the application of methods and means of pollution control;

    • Discuss the application of environmental engineering calculations;

    • Explore the analysis of alternative technological solutions.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Principles of transport phenomena

    • Fundamentals of environmental engineering and management

    • Statistics and economics for environmental management

    • Measurement and control in environmental engineering

    • Wastewater engineering management

    • Solid and hazardous waste control and management

    • Air pollution control engineering

    • Environmental noise assessment and modelling

    • Environmental impact assessment

    • Safety engineering and environmental laws

    Course assessment
    The course assessment will be divided into a continuous assessment (50%) portion and final examination (50%). The continuous assessment portion will include one assignment (10%), a report of practical exercises (10%) and a mini-project that includes an oral presentation (10%) and a written report (20%). A final examination lasting three hours will be conducted at the end of the course. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
