    Energy Management and Audits

    Course Coordinator: Dr C M Lo, BSc (Hons) CUHK, PhD CUHK

    This course will be taught through a part-time face-to-face mode. The course will be presented in English. However, learning materials and references related to relevant technological developments in China might be in written Chinese. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays or Sundays.

    ENVR S890F is designed for the postgraduate programmes in Energy and Environmental Sustainability, and Energy and Environmental Technology Management. This course covers the basic concepts of energy management in industrial and commercial facilities, provides practical information about energy-saving technologies and explains common techniques of energy analysis and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

    This course aims to:

    • Understand and review energy markets, industries and economics;

    • Apply knowledge and skills to analyse and evaluate various energy-related problems;

    • Review critically the importance of energy management to industrial operations and how to cut energy costs;

    • Apply knowledge and skills related to the selection of energy- efficient equipment and systems;

    • Consolidate, extend and develop skills to select economical and practical solutions that are environmentally and socially acceptable;

    • Consolidate, extend and develop skills to conduct a facility- or operation-specific energy audit using workshops, discussion and case studies.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Overview of energy conservation and consumption, climate change and environmental sustainability

    • Economics of energy, for a better understanding of environmental problems

    • Fundamentals in energy management

    • Renewable energy systems and applications

    • Basic concepts of heat transfer in energy management, including numerical analysis

    • Introduction to fuel technology and combustion, including pollution control

    • Industrial energy management, with case studies from Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta

    • Energy economics, policy and legislation in Hong Kong and mainland China

    • Building energy codes in Hong Kong, including a comparison with relevant building codes in mainland China

    • Energy audit and measurement of industrial and commercial enterprises, with particular reference to Hong Kong and mainland China

    There will be one assignment, one report on practical exercises, one mini-project that includes an oral presentation and a written report, and one three-hour examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
