    Important notes
    This course will be taught through a part-time face-to-face mode. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings or Saturdays.

    ENVR S880F Environmental Leadership and Decision-making is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the Master of Science and Postgraduate Certificate programmes in Safety and Environmental studies. With the course materials focusing on contemporary issues of environmental legislation and management, students will be trained to be effective leaders and decision-makers in the environmental profession. Environmentally sustainable practices and stewardship that are closely associated with recent social and economic developments in Hong Kong and mainland China will be the main area of study.

    Aims
    This course aims to:

    • Examine the implications of economic growth and development on environmental protection from the viewpoint of environmental stewardship and environmental governance;

    • Explore methodology for quantifying environmental cost and effectiveness such that wise environmental decisions can be made;

    • Introduce a system-based approach to environmental decision making and development of environmental leadership in corporations, business sectors and the government.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Aims and objectives in environmental decision making

    • Characteristics of environmental leadership

    • Strategies and options for environmental stewardship

    • Development of global visions on environmental crisis and sustainable development

    • Green management, corporate governance and environmental governance

    • Economic instruments in environmental decision making and green management

    • Models and tools in environmental decision making and leadership

    • Globalization of business and contemporary environmental stewardship

    • Environmental leadership and decision making -- the mainland China way

    • Case studies in environmental leadership: Europe, America, SE Asia, Hong Kong and mainland China

    • Strategies for effective environmental management, with particular reference to Hong Kong and the greater Pearl River Delta

    • Green enterprises and environmental entrepreneurs in the contemporary world

    Assessment
    Course assessment will be divided into continuous assessment (50%) and final examination (50%). Continuous assessment will include one assignment (10%), a mini-project that consists of an oral presentation (10%) and a written report (30%). A final examination of three hours will be conducted at the end of the course.
