    ENVR S840F is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the Postgraduate programmes. Students will study contemporary issues in environmental legislation and management with reference to environmental management systems, best environmental practices and environmentally sustainable development in an interactive manner. The course covers detailed discussions on the ISO14000 series, eco-labelling, environmental monitoring and audit. Environmental practices in Hong Kong will be the main focus of study.

    Aims
    The course aims to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to address the multidisciplinary issues of environmental management. The course also helps familiarize students with development and current trends in environmental legislation, with applications to environmental management systems. Students shall learn how to analyse cases of special environmental interest and become competent in dealing with issues related to environmental management in Hong Kong.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Introduction to environmental management and environmental legislation

    • ISO 14000 series — context and models

    • Management of land and local ecological resources

    • Environmental management and legislation framework

    • Environmental monitoring, auditing and reporting

    • Environmental sustainability, with case studies of Hong Kong

    Assessment
    The course assessment will be divided into a continuous assessment (50%) portion and a final examination (50%). The continuous assessment portion may include a quiz and assignments. A three-hour final examination will be conducted at the end of the course. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
