    IT E150 Information Technology for Learning is designed for beginners in computing. Given the importance of IT in university-level work and of the World Wide Web (WWW) in lifelong learning, this course serves as a foundation course for continuing education programmes where IT and Internet skills are required. Students are not expected to have any prior knowledge or qualifications in Information Technology. The course makes use of multimedia material including printed text, and online interactive learning.

    This course uses the Internet as the content delivery medium. Students are required to read all materials on the OUHK learning platform.

    Aims
    This course aims to:

    • Provide students with knowledge and skills in using computers for lifelong learning and for other business/daily-life functions;

    • Provide students with an overview of common hardware components, software applications, multimedia concepts and data communication.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • PC operating systems

    • Word processing

    • Spreadsheets, presentation software and databases

    • Using the Internet in learning

    • Computing systems: Hardware and software

    Learning support
    This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight tutorials where access to computing equipment will be provided.

    Assessment
    There will be three assignments and a final examination.

    Equipment
    Students will need access to the following equipment:

    • An IBM-compatible PC with a Pentium IV or higher processor and a minimum of 512 MB RAM

    • Hard disk of 2.5 GB or higher capacity

    • Colour monitor with a VGA (or SVGA) display card

    • Keyboard and mouse

    • Access to a broadband Internet service

    • Sound card with speakers or headphones, and microphone

    Software
    Students will need access to the following software programs:

    • Microsoft Windows 8.1 / 10

    • Microsoft Office 2013 or above

    • Internet browser and communication software
