    Advisory prerequisite(s)
    You are advised to have already studied ECON A231 and ECON A232, or ECON A231C and ECON A232C.

    Aims
    This course aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the theories of money and banking and how operations in the monetary and banking sectors affect business and investment decisions. It also covers the operations and institutional set-up of the monetary and banking sectors of Hong Kong, China and the United States.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Discussion of the international and banking system of Hong Kong that including a comparison of the institutional arrangements

    • Theories of money and banking, including theories of money demand and interest rate

    • Framework for analysing monetary policy

    • Discussion of money and banking in the international context

    Examples from Hong Kong and the United States are emphasized in each component.

    Learning support
    There will be regular two-hour tutorials and day schools throughout the course.

    Assessment
    There will be four assignments and a final examination.
