    Credits gained from completing this course may be counted towards the ‘free choice credit’ component of most degree programmes. Successful students will receive certificates in addition to their credits. Alternatively, students may choose only to sit the end-of-course examination, which is on a non-credit basis. Successful examination candidates will be awarded certificates.

    Aims
    This course aims to:

    • Develop learners’ basic skills and knowledge in English listening and speaking;

    • Enhance learners’ English proficiency in listening and speaking in academic, social and workplace contexts.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Linguistic foundations of listening and speaking

    • Essential strategies for effective listening and speaking

    • Listening and speaking skills in social and persuasive contexts

    • Listening and speaking skills in academic settings

    • Spoken communication skills in the workplace

    Learning support
    This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight two-hour tutorials.

    Assessment
    There will be three tutor-marked assignments and a final examination that will cover the two language skills, listening and speaking.

    Equipment
    Students will need access to an audio CD player and a VCD player. The course also includes a CD-ROM, for which a PC with a CD-ROM drive is needed, but its use is optional.

    There are no set books for this course.

    Students with disabilities
    The audio components of the materials and assessment for this course may cause difficulties for students with impaired hearing or speech. You should seek advice from the Course Coordinator before enrolling on the course.
