    Course Coordinator: Mr Bruce Tong, BEng (Hons), MPhil (CUHK); MIEEE

    This course is one of the compulsory courses in the BSc and BSc (Hons) in Communications Technology programme. The course is self-contained and assumes no specific knowledge of wireless communication concepts and techniques. It is also suitable as a ‘one-off’ course for anyone who does not intend to complete an OUHK qualification but wants to study wireless communication theories and systems.

    There are no compulsory prerequisites for this course, although prior to commencing study of this course students are advised to have a basic knowledge of communications technology.

    You are advised to have already studied ELEC S211.

    This course aims to:

    • Develop your knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and practices of wireless communications;

    • Develop your ability to plan cellular systems by using knowledge of frequency re-use, cell coverage, system capacity and outage probability;

    • Develop your ability to select various techniques for designing reliable systems over wireless communications channels;

    • Develop your ability to extend services for existing wireless communication systems;

    • Develop your ability to evaluate different wireless system designs and design a system appropriate for an application.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Introduction to wireless communication systems and services

    • Design concepts for cellular systems

    • Mobile radio propagation: Large-scale models

    • Mobile radio propagation: Small-scale models

    • Digital modulation and channel coding techniques for wireless communications

    • Equalization and diversity techniques for wireless communications

    • Wireless personal area networks and wireless local area networks

    • Fixed wireless wide area networks

    • 1G and 2G mobile communications systems and standards

    • 2.5G and 3G mobile communications systems and standards

    • Evolving wireless communications technologies

    Learning support
    There will be regular tutorial and surgery sessions.

    There will be four assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
