    Course Coordinator: Gaius Tam, MEd (HK PolyU); MPhil (HKBU)

    This course is designed to enhance students’ skills in developing a business plan in a professional manner.

    Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

    • Apply and synthesize theories, concepts and techniques from functional areas of strategic management, finance, accounting, marketing, and operations management in the context of new venture development.

    • Demonstrate the practical skills in researching, planning, and developing a business proposal for a new venture.

    • Write an effective business proposal.

    • Communicate the business ideas in a professional manner.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Identifying a business idea to be studied

    • Identifying the relevant theories and concepts for exploring and analysing the business idea

    • Conducting preliminary research and analysis

    • Refining and framing the business idea to be studied and develop a detailed investigation strategy and plan

    • Conducting the investigation and analysis

    • Developing marketing, operational and financial plans for the business idea

    • Evaluating the plans and conclusion

    • Reflecting on the business theories and entrepreneurship practices

    • Writing a business plan

    • Making an oral presentation

    Contact hours
    There will be a total of twelve lecture hours plus consulation hours over three terms.

    There are four written assignments, class participation and one oral presentation (compulsory assignment). The written assignments accounts for 70% of the total course score, the class participation accounts for 10% of the total course score and the oral presentation accounts for 20% of the total course score. All the written assignments and oral presentation are individual assessments. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

    Students will need access to a personal computer with an Internet connection.
