    This course is designed to teach students basic legal principles in property law and the languages (both English and Chinese) used in such legal context.

    Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

    • Analyse the legal terms and principles in property law;

    • Assess the language problems presented by property law texts;

    • Compare the use of language in bilingual texts on property law;

    • Translate legal texts on property law effectively, using the skills and techniques covered in the course;

    • Carry out research in the field of property law.

    This course intends to strengthen students’ ability to understand texts relating to property law and to appreciate the language used in bilingual texts. It prepares students to apply the knowledge learned to translation tasks (such as the translation of assignments, mortgages, deeds of gift, wills and trust documents).

    • Land and property

    • Ownership and possession

    • Easements

    • Leases

    • Mortages

    • Covenants

    Succession to property

    • Wills

    • Intestacy

    • Revocation

    • Entitlement

    Trust law

    • Nature of equity and trusts

    • Types of trust

    • Duties and powers

    • Breaches of trust

    • Study of cases

    • Study of bilingual texts
