    Important notes
    his course will be taught via face-to-face mode. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings or Saturdays.

    TRAN A802BF provides students with an opportunity to explore various major translation theories and principles from east and west. Students will also develop translation skills through translation exercises and critiques either in groups or individually.

    Aims
    The course aims to introduce translation theories and examine their applications in different texts, in order to lay the theoretical and practical foundations for studying translation. It is the first of the three key components in the programme, the second and third being Translation Practicum, and Translation Project respectively.

    Contents
    At the beginning of the course, students will study major Chinese and western translation theories and methods. They will then examine the use of these theories in different texts in workshops. Students will have the chance to present, discuss and comment on each other’s work.

    Contact hours
    Normally two and a half hours per week.

    Assessment
    The continuous assessment includes:

    1. two take-home translation assignments,

    2. translating and presenting texts in workshops, and

    3. participating in discussions in workshops.

    Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
