    Course Coordinator: Dr Emily Poon, MA (CityU HK); PhD (HKU)

    This course, an extension of TRAN A807BF, will give students further practice in translating legal texts and help them gain practical experience in the translation methods peculiar to different types of legal texts. Students who take this course must understand Chinese.

    Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

    • Analyse in-depth the nature and characteristics of legal translation;

    • Identify linguistic and interpretation problems inherent in more complex texts, and solve these problems satisfactorily;

    • Evaluate translated texts critically;

    • Translate complex legal texts using the skills and techniques covered in the course;

    • Carry out research in the field of legal translation.

    Aims
    This course aims to enable students to translate texts relating to contractual, land, company, family and other issues with special reference to the legal concepts acquired in TRAN A816BF, TRAN A817BF, TRAN A818BF and TRAN A819BF, and the linguistic skills fostered in TRAN A804F and TRAN A806F.

    Contents
    The course covers the following topics:

    • Translation of texts relating to contractual, land, company, family and other issues

    • Linguistic problems and solutions
