    Important notes
    This course will be taught via face-to-face mode. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings. This is a core course for the Master of Social Sciences in International Economics and Development.

    Aims
    This course aims to examine the functions of global governance and the impacts of international governmental organizations across a wide range of global issues. It accounts for the development of multilateral institutions, and examines the changes in global order with the emergence of these new players. Global issues such as international security, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, environmental protection, international nongovernmental organizations and global civil society are discussed in detail. In brief, this course reviews the trends and changes in the landscape of global orders, and evaluates the prospects of a more effective, accountable and just global governance.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Key trends in global governance
    • Multilateralism and international regimes
    • International nongovernmental organizations and global civil society
    • Nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
    • Environmental cooperation and climate change
    • Security-oriented organizations: UN and NATO
    • International financial organizations: WB, IMF and WTO
    • Regional organizations: EU and APEC
    • Global governance and international order
    • Presentations and seminars

    Contact hours
    Normally three hours per week.

    Assessment
    There will be one group presentation which accounts for 30%, and two assignments which each account for 35% of the total course score.
