    The aim of this course is to equip students with professional and technical skills in information security.

    Learning outcomes

    1. Describe the current requirements on information security.

    2. Identify organizational assets and their protection using the latest technologies.

    3. Conduct a systematic risk assessment on an organization’s operations.

    4. Develop a practical information security management system for any organization, to the standard set by the ISO 27000 family of standards (particularly 27001 and 27002).

    The course is structured as follows:

    Unit 1: An introduction to information security

    • Why we need to implement information security

    • Identification of information as an organizational asset

    • What are the processes required to satisfy the requirement of the British standards in information security

    Unit 2: Information security risk assessment

    • Identification of the risks that may arise in all relevant aspects of an organization’s operations

    • Conduction of a systematic risk assessment and their treatment

    Unit 3: Information security risk management

    • Development of a fit-for-purpose information security management system through the management of information security risks

    • How to be systematic in the choice of controls that treat specific risks

    • Documentation in risk management

    Learning support

    There will be regular tutorials and surgeries throughout the course.

    This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the course coordinator as well as the other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.
