Professor Yvonne Fung: Fulfilment from years of work in education

Prof. Yvonne Fung, Dean of the School of Education and Languages, faced a demanding schedule before her retirement in mid-August. However, she radiated happiness when talking about her working experience and feelings about her career. The more she talked, the more energetic she appeared.

Prof. Fung joined the OUHK in 1993 as the first full-time academic in the School of Education and Languages. ‘Working here has given me a strong sense of achievement as we were able to implement many new plans during the early days of the School’s establishment.’ She waved her hand towards the teaching materials overflowing the bookshelf beside her. ‘Seeing these teaching materials, my heart is filled with happiness and satisfaction,’ she said. She described herself as a hands-on person with a do-it-yourself ethic. Every page of the teaching materials bore evidence of her hard work.

Prof. Fung recalled the days when she prepared for the launch of the School’s Bachelor of Education with Honours in Primary Education programme. Most of the suitable teaching materials then were in English. To meet the needs of teachers in local primary schools — the majority of whom were using Chinese as the medium of instruction — and to ensure that a global horizon was embodied in the teaching materials, the School decided to develop its own teaching materials in Chinese, which required the translation of large quantities of overseas literature. Although this was an arduous process, primary school teachers gave very positive feedback. Their emails expressing gratitude greatly impressed Prof. Fung. Some retired or retiring primary school teachers went so far as to enrol in the programme to experience a university education, which they had lacked a chance to do in the past. ‘The pleasure and fulfilment involved in offering adult education is unique,’ she said.

Prof. Fung believes an individual’s personal development is largely founded upon the primary and secondary education they receive, and the success of primary and secondary education in turn hinges on the quality of teachers. She therefore has no doubts that teacher education has a great impact on society. ‘My passion for teaching has never faded. I love writing teaching materials, through which I can share my philosophy and enthusiasm about education with others.’

After 19 years of unstinting effort, Prof. Fung is grateful to her colleagues for their wholehearted work to develop a series of quality educational programmes together over the years. As her retirement approaches, she says frankly that she will miss the OUHK and the School. Nevertheless, she believes that a beginning always follows an end. Looking ahead, she is confident that the School will continue to keep pace with the development of the education sector, providing teacher education programmes that meet teachers’ changing needs and preparing them for their important role in society.
