    Post-secondary financial talents visit Shanghai

Full-time Banking and Finance student Chui Cheok-fang and Accounting student Lam Lai-fong were among the 22 outstanding representatives from nine local universities selected to join the Pilot Scheme for Cross-border Study Tour for Post-secondary Financial Talents.

The scheme, organized by the Advisory Committee on Human Resources Development in the Financial Services Sector and supported by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, comprised one week of training in Hong Kong and a six-week tour to Shanghai. During the tour, starting 10 June, the students participated in interactive activities with local students, paid visits to government offices and financial institutions, and took part in work attachments in Shanghai enterprises for four weeks.

Chui Cheok-fang considered the Shanghai tour a valuable experience. He said, ‘The scheme enabled us to understand the actual operation of the financial industry in the mainland. Through the preparation of marketing research reports, we learned more about the classification of local industries, investors’ backgrounds and the market orientation.’ He added that, among the many memorable experiences, visiting a steel plant and meeting with senior government officials, including the deputy mayor, were particularly unforgettable.

    2012 Global Citizenship Programme

Four full-time students, Eleanor Fung Hoi-kwan, Ho Ka-ming and Leung King-fung from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration and Lau Wai-in from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, were selected to join the 2012 Global Citizenship Programme held in New York on 17–24 June. They were among the 30 outstanding representatives from local universities, selected based on exceptional academic performance and a proven record of leadership.

During the eight-day tour, with the theme ‘Understanding of Conflicts in a Global Perspective’, the students studied contemporary issues such as the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street campaign. After the training, which included talks, visits and group project presentations, they came away with an enriched understanding of the sources and impacts of these conflicts and ways to resolve them.

Eleanor Fung said, ‘As a banking and finance student, studying human rights, international relations and political conflicts was a brand new experience which broadened my horizons. I was especially touched when visiting the site of the 9/11 Terrorist Attack, where two firemen who had participated in the rescue work guided the tour. The visit made us understand the importance of peace.

Bronze award in smartphone application contest

Full-time Computing Year 2 student Solomon Tam Sze-wah and a teammate from Hong Kong Baptist University won a Bronze Award in the Smartphone Application Development Contest 2012 (Open and Tertiary Education Category). They jointly designed a smartphone application to encourage good deeds among youngsters. The application provides a platform for volunteers to contact those in the community who need help, understand their situation and needs, and offer assistance. The competition was co-organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the University of Hong Kong.

Chess-playing robot wins student project creativity prize

With his project to invent a robot that plays Chinese chess, full-time Computing Year 3 student Ng Pui-lam received the Project Creativity Prize in the 2012 IEEE Project Competition. The robot allows elderly people to play chess on a real chessboard with any chess-playing software or even with friends and family over the Internet. The competition was co-organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Macau Branch and the University of Macau.
