Students interact with the People's Liberation Army in Hong Kong

Led by Vice President Prof. Leung Chun-ming and two staff members, 15 students joined an exchange activity with the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison organized by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR on 13 October 2012. Together with representatives from other local tertiary institutions, the group enjoyed military and cultural performances and interacted with the troops.

Engineering students visit sewage treatment plant

With the aim of enhancing students’ understanding of sewage treatment, the use of reclaimed water and Total Water System Management, a visit to Ngong Ping Sewage Treatment Works (NPSTW) was organized by the School of Science and Technology on 18 January. Through a tour led by the academic staff of the Engineering Sciences Team, 15 Master of Engineering in Engineering Management students learned how the treated effluent in NPSTW becomes reclaimed water for flushing in nearby public toilets and the toilets in the Cable Car Terminal.

Leadership training programme for full-time students

A series of Leadership Training Programmes was launched between October and November 2012 to enhance full-time students’ leadership, self-awareness, communication and problem-solving skills. Organized by the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service–Student Counselling Service (OUHK), the programme consisted of a training camp, workshops, and voluntary service to help the elderly and the unprivileged. A total of 36 full-time students participated.

Nursing students provide voluntary service for Angel of Diabetic

About 20 students from the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies programme provided voluntary services in the form of health education services and assessments at the World Diabetes Day carnival and a camp for diabetes patients. The activities were organized by the non-profit organization Angel of Diabetic, on 10–11 November and 9 December 2012 respectively.

Welcoming new members to join flight training

The Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (HKACC) 6008 flight in the OUHK was established in 2011 and became the 608 squadron in January 2013. The HKACC is a uniformed group under the policy aegis of the Home Affairs Bureau and a member organization of the Hong Kong Community Chest offering aviation education programmes to prepare young people for possible future service in the local aviation industry. The 608 squadron has over 30 members, providing a wide variety of activities, such as training camps, flying operations, exchange programmes to foreign countries and shooting training courses. Students interested in its activities can send emails to 6008flt@googlegroups.com for more information.
