    President's message

2012/2013 is a challenging year for all local universities, as students completing Forms 6 and 7 entered universities at the same time to begin their full-time Bachelor’s Degree studies. The OUHK had geared up for the challenge. In addition to fine-tuning the curriculum by consolidating and regrouping courses and content, campus expansion and facilities enhancement both got underway. Simultaneously, we have continued to strengthen student support, offering our students a rich university life and a well-rounded learning experience.

In the meantime, the needs of our distance learning students have not been overlooked. Last year the University purchased five floors in the Kowloon Commercial Centre. With the completion of decoration works, more teaching space and facilities will be made available for students, providing an effective learning environment for their pursuit of knowledge.

To pursue teaching excellence, we renamed the Centre for Research in Distance and Adult Learning as the University Research Centre (URC) last November. The URC will extend its scope of research from its original focus on open and distance education to include the full-time, face-to-face mode of education, and will further promote academic research at the University. This will not only help raise the standard of research at the OUHK, but also enhance the effectiveness of teaching.

Our plans and development depend on the support and contributions of many enthusiasts and philanthropists. Just at the beginning of the year, we were most grateful to receive a generous donation of $10 million from Mrs Ella Ng for setting up the Ng Chun Man Professorship in Environmental Science and Conservation. This is the first named professorship at the OUHK, and encourages research in the field of environmental science and conservation. On behalf of the University, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mrs Ng.

Our long-term development depends upon further support from the wider community. A new fundraising campaign is now underway, appealing for donations as well as referrals of family, friends and organizations which have the potential to contribute. I also welcome suggestions for ways in which the University can improve its fundraising plans.

Last but not least, I would like to congratulate our over 5,000 new graduates. I wish you a bright future and all the best on your journey of life.
