Active participation in academic exchanges on open education

Academic1A delegation led by President Prof. John C Y Leong participated in the 26th Annual Conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) held on 16-18 October in Japan. Prof. Leong, joined by Dr Li Kam-cheong, Director of the University Research Centre (formerly the Centre for Research in Distance and Adult Learning), attended the Executive Board and General Board meetings and paid a visit to the Open University of Japan. Dr Li also presented a paper on 'Student Engagement in the Course of Study: An Investigation of Behavioural, Emotional and Cognitive Involvement in Distance Learning.' Other members of the delegation included Head of the Educational Technology and Publishing Unit Dr Yuen Kin-sun, who presented a paper on 'A Hong Kong Open Textbook Initiative,' and Lecturer Mr Christopher Tsui, who presented two papers on the topics of blended learning.

    Symposium discusses open educational resources

Academic2In recent years, the use of open educational resources (OERs) has become a key area in open learning. With a focus on the use of OERs in higher education and related issues of access and equity, the Regional Symposium on Open Educational Resources: An Asian Perspective on Policy and Practices was organized by Wawasan Open University and held in Penang, Malaysia on 19-21 September. Head of the Educational Technology and Publishing Unit Dr Yuen Kin-sun and Director of the University Research Centre Dr Li Kam-cheong from the OUHK attended the symposium and presented two papers entitled 'Development of OER in Hong Kong: A Status Analysis' and 'An Open Textbook System to Tackle Hong Kong's Textbook Problems.'

Conference discusses topics in Oracle applications

Academic3A regional conference, co-organized by the OUHK and the Asia Higher Education User Group (Asia HEUG) on 1-2 November in Hong Kong, was attended by 270 participants from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Macau, China, the US, and Australia. Established in 2011, the Asia HEUG is a community of higher education institutions in Asia which have implemented or are in the process of implementing Oracle applications and are interested in collaborating and sharing experience with each other. The conference consisted of five plenary sessions and 24 breakout sessions covering student management, finance and human capital management, and technical and general interest topics. OUHK Vice President Prof. Leung Chun-ming gave an opening speech and called for further networking, communication and collaboration among the peer institutions and business partners.

ILAC visits OUHK to learn more about our testing and certification programmes

Academic4Chairman of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mr Peter Unger, accompanied by Senior Accreditation Officer of the Hong Kong Accreditation Service Mr K W Chen, visited the OUHK on 18 September. They were warmly received by the Dean of the School of Science and Technology Prof. Ho Kin-chung and members of the School’s Testing and Certification Programme Team, and gained a better understanding of the development and characteristics of our testing and certification programmes.

Legal translation seminar promotes legal bilingualism

Academic5For more than a decade since the implementation of a bilingual legal system in Hong Kong, the use of English has remained dominant over Chinese in the legal profession. The OUHK and the Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translation, with the aim of promoting legal bilingualism, co-organized the Seminar on Legal Translation on 27 October on the OUHK campus. Talks were given on various topics, including common law legal terms, intellectual property, sex and gender, and the rights and liabilities of legal translators. Mr Peter Cheung, Director of Intellectual Property and Registrar of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, Hong Kong SAR, was one of the speakers.

Visit by Parkway College's nursing faculty

Academic6Faculty members from the Parkway College of Nursing and Allied Health, Singapore, visited the University on 18 July. Associate Professor Dr Linda Lee, joined by other members of the Nursing Team, received the delegation and provided an introduction to OUHK’s nursing programmes. The parties discussed opportunities for future collaboration on research and student exchange programmes.

President takes part in ACU Conference of Executive Heads

Academic7As a member university of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), President Prof. John C Y Leong represented the OUHK at the ACU Conference of Executive Heads, held on 11 November in Jamaica. He is a Council Member of ACU, representing Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. University rankings have brought challenges for higher education institutions, and the Conference adopted a broad perspective to discuss performance measures and benchmarking, while examining other factors such as economic policies, changing political and social agenda, staff recruitment and retention, and student aspirations. The Conference also marked the beginning of ACU Centenary celebrations.
