OUHK Testing and Certification Day attracts hundreds of visitors video

More than 300 practitioners from the testing and certification industry and members of the pubic attended the Testing and Certification Day organized by the School of Science and Technology on 3 November on the OUHK campus. Aimed at increasing public awareness of the industry, the event included a variety of activities such as a seminar, a career exhibition, briefing sessions and a laboratory tour.

The OUHK and the Hong Kong Association for Testing, Inspection and Certification signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the same day, facilitating collaboration on the provision of seminars, technical visits and practical training. The School of Science and Technology also appointed the Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre (STC) Chief Executive Dr Richard Fung as Honorary Professor at the event. At the Seminar on Testing and Certification as a Profession, leaders of the industry and representatives from related government departments were invited to share their views on the latest developments and career prospects in the industry. At the career exhibition, participating organizations provided information and answered questions about their businesses.

'With the establishment of the Professional Certification Scheme for Testing Personnel, employees can build up a professional image, employers will find it easier to recruit suitable talent, and the public will have more confidence in certified products and services.'

    Mr K L Tsang,
Chairman, Certification Scheme for Testing Personnel Certification Board, Hong Kong Association for Testing, Inspection and Certification

'Public awareness of product safety is growing, and the government has already tightened controls in this respect. There will thus be greater demand for testing and certification in the market.'

    Mr Harry Yeung,
    Chief Operations Officer, STC

'Hong Kong's testing and certification industry enjoys great potential given Hong Kong's prime location as well as the presence of a sound accreditation system, professional integrity and high technical standards.'

    Dr John C W Ho,
Senior Accreditation Officer, Hong Kong Accreditation Service

'A Qualifications Framework has been implemented in the industry and a set of Specifications of Competency Standards formulated for human resource management purposes. Practitioners can therefore receive recognition for their skills, expertise and work experience.'

    Mr David Yu,
    Senior Manager, Qualifications Framework Secretariat

'No local university has ever launched a formal programme on testing and certification, and the OUHK is the only institution in Hong Kong to offer a curriculum on the subject as an independent discipline, which is extremely useful for the industry in terms of training and accrediting personnel.'

    Mr Chapman Chan,
Convener, Specification of Competence Standards Drafting Sub-working Group (Electrical Testing), Industry Training Advisory Committee (Testing, Inspection and Certification Industry)

'The OUHK will devote more resources to launching a curriculum that meets the industry's needs, aiming to groom the new personnel needed to drive the sector's sustainable development.'

    Dr George H K Lau,
Associate Professor and Programme Leader (Testing and Certification), OUHK
