Student1Computing students excel in academic paper-writing

Two full-time Computing Year 4 students performed impressively in writing academic papers. Tse Hau-ting won the 2011 IEEE Hong Kong Section (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest with his paper on the local minimum problem in machine learning algorithms. Dennis Tsui Siu-fung, co-author of a paper on mobile learning, received an Excellent Paper Award at the 2012 International Conference on ICT in Teaching and Learning.

Six students selected to join cultural exchange programme

Six OUHK full-time students were among the 50 representatives from local tertiary institutions selected to join the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Youth Cultural Exchange Programme held between 16 and 25 July. The participants, who are talented in music, dance, sports, drama or the performing arts, visited Macau, Guangdong and Fujian, and met with young talents of those places. The programme was organized by the Home Affairs Bureau to broaden the horizons of Hong Kong's young people and deepen cultural understanding among young people.

Student2Environmental studies student receives award for paper

With a paper entitled 'Green and sustainable initiatives on Hong Kong university campuses', Lee Wing-hang won a certificate of merit in the Environmental Paper Award presented by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers -- Environmental Division. A student in the Master of Science in Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental Management programme, he co-authored the paper with Assistant Professor Dr Yau Yiu-hung from the School of Science and Technology. The paper critically reviews sustainable development projects and evaluates buildings on local university campuses. Wing-hang was also invited to present the paper at the International Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management Conference held on 25-29 June in Finland.

Outstanding Accounting student achieves best result in public examination

Li Hiu-wah, a student from the Bachelor of Professional Accounting with Honours programme, attained the highest mark in Paper II of the Professional Bridging Examination of the Hong Kong Institute of Accredited Accounting Technicians in June 2012. Her exceptional performance also won her Outstanding Student Awards in three of the five compulsory courses she took at the OUHK.

Professional recognition for Film Arts students

With his documentary film More than Ice-cream -- Wong Kwong, final year student of the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Writing and Film Arts programme Riley Leung won a Silver Award at the 2012 Taipei International Digital Content Awards. The film also won a Prize-of-Effort award at the 14th DigiCon6 Animation and Movie Awards co-organized by TBS Television Inc. and the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association, and was screened in Tokyo in mid-November. It was nominated or selected to show at film festivals in the UK, Chile, Hungary and the mainland. His short film Hunting Dream, produced by Lee Man-tsun, another final year student of the same programme, was shortlisted in the Fresh Wave 2012 -- International Short Film Festival and shown at Broadway Cinematheque.

Student4Outstanding project award in ambassador scheme

Full-time BBA student Yeung Sze-ki received an outstanding project award in the Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme 2011-12. With the theme 'Cultivate Excellence; Nurture Service Stars', the scheme comprised five weeks of training, company visits, mentorship and a service programme of at least 60 service hours. The scheme was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the Tourism Commission.

Student5Language student chosen for International Youth Exchange Programme

Melody Lee Wing-tung, from the School of Education and Languages, was selected to join the International Youth Exchange Programme 2012-13. She was among 15 successful candidates chosen for their outstanding academic results and impressive records of community service to visit Kagoshima, Japan between 16 and 23 August.

Co-organized by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Commission on Youth, the programme offered homestays, visits and a variety of cultural and educational exchanges. Melody treasured the opportunity to travel on an exchange trip in her last year of study and the rare experience to live with a local family. She said, 'During the tour, there were two particularly unforgettable moments. First, the news team of a local television station interviewed us. Second, in a question-and-answer session during our visit to the Deputy County Chief's office, I had the courage to ask him his views on the Diaoyu Islands dispute between China and Japan.'

With her experience from the tour, Melody encourages OUHK students to work hard and not give up if they are misunderstood or encounter biases. She believes everyone can achieve great things if they do their best.
