    President's message

The eleventh of October was a day of celebration and pride for many Chinese as well as the OUHK, as Dr Mo Yan, our 2005 honorary graduate, made history by becoming the first Chinese national to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

A renowned novelist, Mo Yan's works take as their subject the peasantry and the struggles of ordinary people to survive. The OUHK presented him a degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, in 2005 in recognition of his profound achievements in literature. The Swedish Academy hailed him for his 'hallucinatory realism,' which merges 'folk tales, history and the contemporary.' The OUHK concurs with these remarks and applauds his success.

I am delighted to bring you two more pieces of good news. First, the OUHK and the Open University, UK (UKOU) recently signed a renewal Licensing Agreement and Broadcast Agreement. We have since our establishment in 1989 been licensing UKOU materials and we value this long-term partnership. Second, following the signing of a renewal agreement with TVB Pearl, a new series of OUHK's Open for Learning educational TV programmes began being broadcast in October.

In addition, we just signed a memorandum of understanding with four self-financed higher education institutions to establish a credit transfer arrangement and facilitate student exchanges over the next five years. This is a step in the right direction, as it is time that we caught up with some other countries by introducing a more effective credit transfer system across our tertiary organizations.

As a new academic term has begun, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new full-time students who joined the OUHK this September. They are pathfinders under the new '3+3+4' academic structure. With our new programmes and a broader curriculum already in place, all of our students can rest assured that a well-rounded, balanced educational experience awaits them.

We at the same time must bid farewell to the Head of Human Resources Mr Jack Fan, who has served the University for 24 years since he joined the preporatory team for establishing the then Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong in 1988. We express our deepest gratitude to him for his contributions and wish him all the best.
