Gaining a deeper understanding of life and death through voluntary service

Through a volunteer experience programme held in May, 72 full-time students were guided to see the value and meaning of life and death. They visited the Noah’s Ark Life Education House, gaining a deeper understanding of attitudes towards life and death at different life stages. They also learned about the pressure experienced by a dying patient’s family and the needs of the bereaved. After hospital training, the students provided voluntary service to terminal cancer patients. The programme, which ended with an award presentation ceremony held on 31 May, was organized by the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service–Student Counselling Service (OUHK).

Hong Kong mainland students celebrate HKSAR 15th anniversary

To celebrate the Hong Kong SAR’s 15th anniversary, the Hong Kong Chinese Students and Scholars Association presented an evening show at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 2 June. OUHK mainland students Ms Huang Huiyao and Ms Huang Qixin jointly gave a piano performance at the show.

    Student Christian Fellowship (Full-time Programme)

The Student Christian Fellowship (Full-time Programme) holds regular gatherings every Tuesday to congregate with hymns, games and sharing. Two subgroups, namely the One and the United Christian Choir, and the Student Nurses Christian Fellowship, organize gatherings on Thursdays and Mondays respectively. The fellowship welcomes new members and interested students may contact them at sftscf@gmail.com.

Nursing students help provide free body check-ups

A dozen Year 1 students of the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies programme got together on 18 March to offer voluntary service at the Hospital Authority. At the invitation of the Hong Kong Stoma Association, they helped carry out health assessments for the elderly.

    I-Care Peer Counselling Programmes

A series of I-Care Peer Counselling Programmes was launched between February and March to encourage students to understand and care more about the needs of others so as to cultivate a positive attitude towards and bond with both the University and the community. The programmes, organized by the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service–Student Counselling Service (OUHK), consisted of workshops for self-esteem enhancement and caring skills training, community activities, voluntary service, an exhibition and games. A total of 26 full-time students completed the programmes and shared their feelings and experiences at an award presentation ceremony held on 8 March.
