    President's message

The OUHK’s Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE) marked its 20th Anniversary with a spectacular banquet held on 15 June. Distinguished guests, students, alumni and colleagues got together to enjoy the festivities and witness the Institute proudly moving into its next decade.

On this occasion, Director Prof. Lui Yu-hon and his brilliant team were commended for their painstaking efforts in promoting the mission of lifelong learning.

Looking back at the past 20 years, LiPACE has achieved a number of significant milestones. Facing strong competition and many new challenges arising from social change, LiPACE has been able to create repeated success in the provision of continuing education. We are proud of its remarkable achievements and thankful for the unremitting support from partners and community members.

In its efforts to keep pace with the needs of society, the OUHK is committed to addressing social issues of public concern and encouraging open discussion. The forum ‘How eco-friendly does Hong Kong want to be, and can it be?’, to which nearly 40 environmental group leaders and prominent guest speakers were invited to give their views on various environmental issues, was enlightening and visionary.

Under the impetus of the Ministry of Education and the HKSAR Government, the OUHK, together with 11 local funded and self-financed higher education institutions, recently signed a memorandum of understanding with 13 renowned universities in the mainland. The signing marks closer academic linkages and greater exchange between the two places for the future.

At the OUHK, I am always extremely impressed and gratified to see our students demonstrate great promise through outstanding academic performance, leadership and commitment to the community. Some of our students recently received scholarships and awards in competitions, while others were chosen after rigorous selection processes to join global exchange programmes.

Finally, we extend our warmest welcome to the new members of the OUHK Council. At the same time, we bid farewell to the Dean of the School of Education and Languages Prof. Yvonne Fung, who has served the University for 19 years and just retired in August, and express our deepest gratitude to her for her contributions.
