    2011 Global Citizenship Programme

Chan May-yan, full-time Accounting Year 1 student, was among the outstanding representatives from local universities selected to join the Global Citizenship Programme organized by the Dragon Foundation this summer. ‘Sustainable Development Opportunities and Challenges: Global, Regional, and Local Levers for Migration Issues’ was the theme of the seven-day programme in Bangkok starting on 19 June. By exploring the causes, and positive and negative impacts on sending and receiving countries of regional migration issues, participants found out how migration has affected sustainable development policies. May-yan said she had learnt a lot through participatory learning, role-plays and presentation of group projects. She was also glad to have had the chance to better understand the culture of Thailand and to form valuable friendships with other student representatives.

Paper-writing contest award for computing student

Full-time Computing Year 3 student Alan Fung won Second Runner-up in the 2010 IEEE Hong Kong Section (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest with his paper entitled ‘An Improved Resilient Propagation Algorithm by Introducing Deterministic Weight Modification’.

    Student Christian Fellowship summer activities

The Student Christian Fellowship (Full-time Programme) and the One and the United Christian Choir organized several activities this summer. They included two volunteers’ visits to Long Bin Interim Housing on 21 June and 9 July, a wilderness camping trip to Chek Keng, Sai Kung co-organized with the Student Outdoor Activities Society on 20–21 July, and an orientation camp held in Tseung Kwan O on 1–3 September. Students interested in their activities can visit www.scf-ouhk.org or send emails to the Student Christian Fellowship (sftscf@gmail.com)/The One and the United Christian Choir (oucc@scf-ouhk.org)/Student Nurses Christian Fellowship (sncf@scf-ouhk.org) for more information.

Students' Union acts as a voice for students

Since taking office in April, the Students’ Union has been exerting its best efforts to serve the students. In the past few months, the Students’ Union designed several questionnaires to collect students’ views and comments on the existing facilities and the construction of the New College, hoping to bring their voices to the OUHK management. Having just completed the orientation camp, the Students’ Union is now conducting a computer discount programme on campus. It is also showing concern for social issues through such activities as observing the Legislative Council meetings on the issues of civic education and the impact of nuclear development in Hong Kong. In the months ahead, the Students’ Union will organize more activities of different types to continue to meet students’ needs.
