    President's message

Following the introduction of the New Academic Structure in secondary schools in 2009, local universities will switch to a four-year undergraduate degree system in 2012. While the new ‘3+3+4’ structure will have a great impact on local education, it also signifies an opportunity for the OUHK to move forward and excel.

The OUHK has been a pioneer in providing four-year university education in Hong Kong. It started offering full-time four-year Bachelor’s Degree programmes as early as 2003. Building on this experience, the University has reviewed and refined the curriculum of its degree programmes and strengthened its general education courses. It is committed to implementing the new system, seeking to provide a well-rounded, balanced educational experience to its students.

The University owes much of its success to the generous donations we continue to receive from philanthropists, institutions and organizations. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has recently approved a $200.7 million grant to the OUHK. This will be used to fund the construction of our New College and to launch an Integrated Healthcare Education Programme. We are extremely grateful to the Trust for its generous support of the OUHK.

We have also received sponsorships for our students to participate in a number of academic exchange programmes overseas and in mainland China. These activities help to broaden our students’ horizons and enrich their educational experience.

On the academic front, the University and its Schools continue to work with our counterparts both within Hong Kong and in other parts of the world. We have just signed two memorandums of understanding, one with Heep Hong Society and the other with the Indira Gandhi National Open University. In addition, we received several overseas delegations and further explored possibilities of cooperation with the mainland.

At the OUHK, there is nothing more gratifying than seeing our students, whether full-time or distance learning, attain their goals — to learn more and to enrich their lives. I am deeply impressed by their determination to pursue knowledge. Equally noteworthy is the encouraging news of our graduates gaining more and more external recognition.

Finally, as new members have recently joined the OUHK Council, we extend our warmest welcome to them, especially the three community leaders who are dedicated to the development of education in Hong Kong. At the same time, we bid farewell to the retired members and thank them for their contributions. Within the OUHK community, we all share the vision of providing tertiary education to those aspiring to it. Together, we will continue to do our utmost to achieve this vision.
