    President's message

The OUHK has once again received a positive response to its fundraising efforts in the Government’s Fifth Matching Grant Scheme. The support of alumni, staff, students and friends in the community has brought in a total of $95.4 million in donations plus matching grants. This will aid the University in its efforts to develop new facilities, provide student assistance, offer new courses and further improve its services.

The University is committed to using the latest communications technology to enhance learning support for students and to make its educational resources freely available to the public. We are happy to report on a few exciting developments in this respect.

First and foremost is the establishment of the ‘Jockey Club Audio-Visual Production Centre’. This gives the OUHK cutting-edge facilities for the production of high-quality, high definition educational TV programmes, and provides the University with excellent post-production facilities with which to train our creative writing and film arts students. None of this would have been made possible without the generous support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, which has kindly donated $15.56 million for the project.

We have continued to make our learning materials accessible via both traditional and new media. Recently we have worked with LG Electronics HK Limited to provide access to the OUHK’s educational TV programmes on LG’s Smart TV. Furthermore, a new series of Open for Learning was launched in April and is aired every Sunday morning on TVB Pearl.

Aspiration for higher education is on the rise in Hong Kong, and this is evident in the high turnout at our Study Planning Day and the Education and Career Expo. To keep pace with the changes in society, the OUHK has been developing new programmes to meet various learning needs. It also regularly brings together industry experts to discuss industry outlooks and to explore manpower needs. One such event is the Testing and Certification Industry Summit held in March of this year.

Learning is an invaluable process, and a lot more has been done by the OUHK to support lifelong learning. Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American physician, professor and author of the 19th century, said, ‘Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.’ Through learning, we acquire new knowledge and explore new ideas. In doing so, we are helping to shape the direction of the future.
