    New Students’ Union inaugurates

Cabinet ‘Yau Yan’ won the Students’ Union (SU) election held on 25 and 26 March with a vote of confidence of 89%. The new President of the Executive Committee of the SU, Chris Leung, said the cabinet is named after a Chinese adage which literally means ‘to implement a policy of benevolence with assistance from friends’. He and his team will try their best to serve OUHK students and listen to comments. The inauguration ceremony of the SU took place on 19 April. Director General of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Mr Zhang Xueli, Commissioner for Census and Statistics Mr Fung Hing-wang, Executive Director of Hong Kong Mortgage Consultants Ltd Mr King Yip and OUHK President Prof. John C Y Leong officiated at the ceremony.

Visit Foreign Ministry Office in HK

Five students, led by Associate Professor of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Chiu Yu-lok, attended a joint institution activity organized by the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR on 24 February. During the visit to the office, students had an exchange of ideas with the officials and diplomats.

The Runner Club takes part in the Standard Chartered Marathon

The Student Runner Club has been supportive of the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon for years. This year, more than 30 members of the club joined various races, including the 10K run, and half and full marathon. The full marathon was the most popular among members, and it was encouraging to see that all representatives completed the race within the required time limit.

Full-time Social Sciences Year 3 student Shieu Tsz-wang won first prize in the undergraduate division of an essay competition organized by the Chung Hwa Travel Service Hai Hwa Foundation and China Airlines Hong Kong to promote the culture and scenic beauty of Taiwan. First Runner-up in Water Conservation Design Competition

Full-time Computing Year 1 student Wong Sai-wai recently received the First Runner-up honour in the Tertiary Education Student Group category of the Water Conservation Design Competition. The event was organized by the Water Supplies Department to promote water conservation. The award presentation ceremony was held on 19 April.

    Community participation of nursing students

Nursing students took part in the debate competition organized by the Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff in Princess Margaret Hospital on 15 January. Competitors were from the nursing departments of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Hong Kong. The OUHK team was named the best cheering squad.

Several students of the Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies got together on 21 January to donate blood at the Red Cross.

More than 20 nursing students provided volunteer nursing service in the charity run held on 23 January. The event was to raise fund for Breakthrough.

Nursing students enthusiastically participated in the Swine Flu Programme launched by the OUHK Nursing Team in February. Students visited Ma On Shan, Shatin and Kowloon City and taught over 2,000 school children the proper way to wash hands and wear facial marks.

Nursing students provided free body check-up services in community activities. These included providing free check-up services to some 500 Ping Chau residents in an event organized by the Hong Kong Outlying Islands Women’s Association on 6 March, taking part in the health assessment activity held on 20 March at the invitation of the Hong Kong Stoma Association, and giving free health assessment services at the Mong Kok Kai Fong Association Limited Chan Hing Social Service Centre in an activity co-organized by the St Paul’s Hospital and the Rotary Club of the Kowloon Golden Mile on 10 April.

Debate in ‘Liberal Cup Debate Competition’

The OUHK Student Debate and Speech Society’s first attempt at the ‘Liberal Cup Debate Competition’ has met with strong competition from last year’s winner, the debate team of the University of Science and Technology. Although losing the match held on 16 April, team members said they enjoyed the process and gained valuable experience. This has helped boost their confidence in preparation for the upcoming ‘Basic Law Cup Debate Competition’ in June.

    Sharing by Student Christians

The Student Christian Fellowship (Full-time Programme) held two gatherings on 15 and 29 March for members to share their religious faith. The activities included games, singing hymns and sharing sessions.
