    Poems from a bus ride

Jason Chow’s path to poetry may seem unusual: it began during a job as a bookshop assistant. He came across some poems in the shop where he worked, and was inspired to write his own.

He has since won several awards, including the championship in the poetry category of the 2010 City Literary Awards. Although he had won top honours in other literature competitions, he says this award meant the most because it showed that his intensely local work had spoken to international judges.

Jason has been an OUHK student since 2007, studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Language and Literature. After disappointing HKCEE results, he studied at a vocational school to prepare for work. Following several odd jobs, Jason started working in a bookshop. Stirred by the poems he discovered in publications sold there, he began to write and submit his own works to the editors of those publications.

This put him in touch with several experienced poets, who led Jason to a breakthrough. ‘I am deeply influenced by their writing, which is largely based on issues in daily life,’ Jason says. His award-winning poem, ‘A Stone Back to the Stream,’ is about his thoughts on life and death inspired by what he saw during bus journeys from Yuen Long to Fanling.

At the OUHK, Jason is able to study literature in greater depth and broaden his knowledge in other areas. He is touched by the support from tutors who treat him ‘like a family member’ and impressed by their flexible teaching methods. Now a teaching assistant at a primary school, Jason plans to pursue a career in education. His first collection of poetry will be published this summer.
