    President's Message

Thanks to the enthusiastic support from many alumni, students, staff and friends in the community, the OUHK has already raised $45 million to match the Government’s Matching Grant on a 1:1 basis. We still stand a good chance to get more from the grant, as every $2 raised in addition can be matched with $1 by the Government, up to the highest total of $220 million. We are competing for the grant on a first-come, first-served basis with 11 other tertiary education institutions, so please send us your gift today to help the OUHK grasp this precious opportunity!

In addition to the above good news, OUHK students have won awards in several open competitions recently, such as the City Literary Awards, Hong Kong Footwear Design Competition, and Dust Control Measures and/or Tools Design Competition. Our Honorary Professor Liu Yichang was featured as the Writer of the Year at the Hong Kong Book Fair, while the OUHK Press published the new book Liu Yichang and Hong Kong Modernism.

Following the recent launch of our Open Learning digital platform, we have gone mobile with Apple's iTunes U and also now have a presence on YouTube (www.youtube.com/openuofhk). As a result, our free courseware, TV programmes and other educational resources are now available for free viewing and download by people around the world. The fact that iTunes U has selected the OUHK as one of its first two university partners in Hong Kong is vivid recognition of our efforts and achievements in promoting online learning.

We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO in Italy to offer a Master of Laws in Chinese Business Law programme in Europe and the Mediterranean region as well as a Master’s Course in European Law and Policies in Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia. This October, our School of Science and Technology will offer the world’s first Chinese taught programme in environmental management. People from around the world can study it online to get a Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership and Decision Making.

While e-learning is a major direction for our future development, our full-time face-to-face programmes have recorded continuous growth in student numbers. Our first alumni body for graduates from full-time programmes has just been established. And we shall see the graduation of our first batch of full-time students recruited from mainland China.

You can read about the details of the above stories — and much more — in this issue of Openlink.
