The 2010-11 Full-time Programmes Graduation Ceremony was held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on 5 September, with Vice-President (Technology and Development) Prof. Leung Chun-ming, Director of LiPACE Prof. Lui Yu-hon and representatives of partner organizations in attendance. This year, over 1,400 students graduated from the Yi Jin Certificate, Pre-Associate Degree, Diploma and Advanced/Professional Diploma programmes. Teaching Excellence Awards and scholarships were presented to instructors and students in recognition of their outstanding contributions and academic performance respectively.

Radio programmes and seminars jointly launched with Midland

photo Following the kick-off of the collaboration project 'Midland Real Estate Professional Development Project' between LiPACE and Midland Holdings in July, a series of radio programmes on real estate was launched in August. The programmes were broadcast on Metro Radio Finance at 1-2 pm on ten consecutive Saturdays beginning on 13 August. They covered topics on the local and mainland China real estate markets, and gave market information on transactions and investment in residential and commercial properties. In addition, a series of public seminars has also been launched under the project, in order to help the general public learn more about the operation of the real estate industry, and to explore ways to improve the service quality of and promote professional ethics in the sector. The seminars, taking place once a month at the OUHK Island Learning Centre, started September of this year and will run until February 2012. Learn more about the seminars or listen to the sound clips of the radio programmes by visiting our web page at www.ouhk.edu.hk/lipace/realestate.

Staff members participate in academic activity and community service

photo Mr Alex Tse, Senior Programme Manager and Team Leader of the Health and Social Sciences Team of LiPACE, was presented the President's Distinguished Service Certificate by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), UK for his contributions to the profession in recent years. He has been serving the IOSH since 2007 and was appointed Chairman of the Hong Kong Branch for 2009-10.

Director of LiPACE Prof. Lui Yu-hon was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Advisory Committee to assist in the development of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. He was also elected Honorary Treasurer of the Federation for Continuing Education in Tertiary Institutions to help promote lifelong learning.

photo Senior Programme Manager Dr Magdy Ma published an article entitled 'Visual Wellbeing: Intersections of Rhetorical Theory and Design' in the academic journal Design Issues of the MIT Press, illustrating the interrelationship between design and visual rhetoric. The Theory of Visual Wellbeing may apply to research on the meaning of visual design, the article suggests.

photo Junior secondary student completes professional programme on commercial comic art

Alice Wong, an active and vivacious Secondary 3 student, enrolled in LiPACE's Professional Certificate in Commercial Comic Art programme in the summer after she had completed her primary education. Later, she continued with the Professional Diploma programme, graduating in April of this year. Alice recalls that her interest in comics has been growing ever since she first read the Japanese comic series Death Note, a gift from her mother when she was in Primary 4. Two years later, upon learning that there was no age limit to enter LiPACE's comic programmes, she immediately submitted her application. During her studies, she met many like-minded friends. Their most unforgettable experience was selling their own works at an exhibition. Alice demonstrates an emerging appetite for comics, but she is confident that her own study will not be affected. 'I draw comics to help me with memorization, especially when studying history,' she said. Her dream is to become a designer or a comic artist, and to launch her own brand and picture books.

    New programmes

    Diploma in Real Estate Management

Jointly organized by LiPACE and Midland Holdings, this is the first diploma programme offered in Hong Kong for real estate agents. The programme aims to provide students with a theoretical framework for understanding the industry, including the regulatory requirements and trade practices of the real estate business in Hong Kong, as well as the investment features of real estate-related products. The programme also equips students with management skills necessary in leading a sales team, and in solving ethical and legal issues encountered in the real estate agency industry.

    Professional Certificate in Management Accounting

The programme provides training to students in interpreting the financial reports of listed companies in Hong Kong and evaluating the financial performance of organizations. This is designed to assist students in attaining the qualification of Registered Business Accountant (RBA) granted by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA), Australia. Graduates of the programme will be fully exempted from Papers 9 to 12 of the RBA examinations, and may apply for the CMA membership upon completion of the remaining six papers with five years relevant working experience.
